Anna Delvey, the infamous woman who defrauded New York elites and banks, is excited to have power over her narrative.
The "fake heiress," born Anna Sorokin, recently had her social media privileges restored after a two-year ban. Following compelling arguments from her lawyers, a judge finally agreed to allow her grand comeback to media platforms.
Anna Delvey, the inspiration behind Netflix's hit drama series "Inventing Anna," was jailed as a con artist in 2019. Despite receiving the guilty verdict for scamming multiple people and businesses, she never believed she did anything wrong.
Anna Delvey's Highly-Anticipated Social Media Comeback Is Here!
According to new reports, a judge has finally granted Delvey the right to return to social media. She was expected to make her grand comeback on the evening of Friday, August 23, marking the end of her 2022 ban.
In her attorneys' plea to the court, they argued the social media restriction served "absolutely no purpose in mitigating any flight risk or threat to the community that Ms. Sorokin may present and clearly violate her constitutional rights."
Delvey's social media return could help her reshape her infamous image, an opportunity she was excited to have. She raved about taking back the power to tell her story to Page Six, saying:
"I would like to thank the United States government court system and especially my lawyers, John Sandweg and Catherine Hunstad, for fighting for my First Amendment rights. I'm also grateful and thrilled to be able to control my own narrative once again on social media."
Could Delvey's Return Boost Her Fashion Pursuits?
Besides the opportunity to revamp her image, Delvey's social media return could lead to business opportunities. She has made a splash in the fashion industry despite her infamous swindler status.
During her trial, the fake heiress went viral for her unique courtroom style and used that fame to launch a "pop-up agency" called the OutLaw Agency. She joined hands with fashion industry legend Kelly Cutrone for the business.
Delvey has also hosted a Fashion Week show for designer Shao Yang of Shao New York and used one of her immigration courtroom appearances to promote Yang's work by rocking a custom design for the hearing.
The Infamous Swindler Was Banned Following Her Time In Custody
Delvey received the social media ban in October 2022, and The Blast reported that she was in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. She was apprehended in March 2021 for overstaying her visa and released on a $10,000 bail.
The social media restriction was an additional order from the court following her release from ICE custody. Given the fake lifestyle Delvey frequently showcased on her social media platforms, this was presumably a preventive method.
She used famous platforms like Instagram to flaunt an extravagant demeanor, roping in wealthy friends and investors into thinking she was an aristocrat. At the time, the government argued she was a danger to society, but her lawyer begged to differ.
John Sandweg, Delvey's lawyer, applauded the judge's decision to release her from ICE custody. "She hasn't been accused of committing a crime since 2017," he argued, noting the ICE could adequately manage whatever risk she could pose.
Delvey Doesn't Believe She Is A Con Artist
During her time in the Orange County facility, The Blast reported that Delvey appeared on an episode of the "Call Her Daddy" podcast. She claimed she didn't do anything wrong, nothing her lies never criminally harmed anyone.
Pretending to have over millions in a trust fund wasn't out of the ordinary, as Delvey believed "60 million is borderline poor in New York." She stressed that she wasn't a scammer and was only being herself during her time in the Big Apple.
"I guess it's just easier to ask somebody for, I don't know, 20 million when they already think you have money," Delvey claimed, noting that she never told "any senseless lies. Unless they were, like, a bank."
Anna Delvey Claimed She Never Pretended To Be A German Heiress
During her podcast interview, Delvey doubled down on not deceiving anyone about her heiress status. She claimed she never told anybody she was a German heiress and refuted the allegations of inheriting money.
"No, like, no one introduces yourself like that. Like, what kind of sentence is that? It's completely ridiculous," Delvey explained, adding: "I cannot testify to what people are assuming about me. I don't know."
Anna Delvey's return to social media is sure to cause a buzz just like her infamous case did. But will she shed new light on her past or launch more fashion ventures?
