The 2024 Olympic bronze medal drama continues, with Jordan Chiles still holding onto it with no intention of giving it back.
As The Blast reported, Chiles snagged the bronze medal after her coach, Cecile Landi, made a last-minute appeal that bumped her floor routine score, lifting her from fifth to third place and knocking Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu off the podium. But, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) later ruled that Team USA’s appeal came in four seconds past the one-minute deadline.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) quickly followed up, confirming that Jordan's medal would be stripped and handed over to Barbosu.
However, Jordan Chiles has no plans to give the bronze medal back.
U.S. Officials Say They Have Video Proof That The Inquiry Was Filed In Time
U.S. officials dropped a time-stamped video showing that their appeal of Jordan Chiles' score was filed 47 seconds after her score was announced—well within the one-minute deadline, not four seconds late as claimed during the CAS hearing.
Despite the video evidence proving Chiles deserved the bronze medal, CAS said it couldn’t reopen the case. The USOPC fired back, saying, "Our objections have now been validated by new evidence showing administrative errors by FIG and mishandlings by CAS. We were denied a meaningful chance to be heard due to the rushed hearing."
Jordan Chiles Has No Plans On Giving Bronze Medal Back
The American gymnast is back in the States and still holding on to the bronze medal she snagged in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics, according to insiders who spilled the tea to USA TODAY Sports but asked to stay anonymous.
No plans are in place for Jordan Chiles to return the bronze medal, as U.S. officials gear up to challenge what the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee called "significant procedural errors" by CAS. The appeal is likely headed to the Swiss Federal Tribunal.
On Wednesday, the USOPC said in a statement that from August 6-9, “CAS sent crucial communications to erroneous email addresses at USOPC and USAG (USA Gymnastics), an error not corrected until August 9—three days after filing, two days past the deadline to submit objections, and less than 24 hours before the hearing. This deprived us of adequate time to respond meaningfully or gather necessary evidence. We informed CAS of our objections immediately.”
Jordan Chiles Receives Support From Athletes And Celebrities
Shortly after the news broke, her teammates, Simone Biles, Jade Carey, and Suni Lee all released statements.
"Sending you so much love Jordan," Simone wrote at the time. "Keep your chin up Olympic champ! We love you!"
Lee said, "All this talk about the athlete, what about the judges?? Completely unacceptable. This is awful and I'm gutted for Jordan. I got your back forever Jo. U have all my flowers and you will ALWAYS be an Olympic champion."
And Carey expressed, "Don't punish the athlete for someone else's mistake. With you all the way Jo. You are forever an Olympic champion that has so much to be proud of."
Flavor Flav also made Jordan Chiles a custom bronze clock necklace amid the controversy.
Jordan Chiles’ Coach Fires Back
Team USA women’s gymnastics coach Cecile Canqueteau-Landi has had it with the backlash.
In an Instagram post on Tuesday, August 6, she congratulated Chiles and Biles on their Olympic wins, but the comments quickly turned into a storm of criticism over the team's inquiry request.
“I shouldn’t have to explain but I will ONCE,” she said at the time. “Jordan’s highest possible SV on floor is a 5.9- At quals and team finals she received a 5.8 and we didn’t question it because we saw that not all elements were completed."
"During floor finals, we thought [it] was better and being placed 5th with nothing to lose, I sent the inquiry so I wouldn’t regret not asking," she continued. "I didn’t think it would be accepted and at my surprise it was.”
Canqueteau-Landi Acknowledged The Heartbreak Of Romanian Gymnast Ana Barbosu
Romanian gymnast Ana Barbosu, who was celebrating with her country’s flag on the floor while Chiles' inquiry was being reviewed, was soon hit with the reality that she hadn't actually won the bronze. The 18-year-old was seen visibly emotional and left the event in tears during the broadcast.
“Do I feel bad for the Romanian athlete? Of course I do! It was so sad and heartbreaking to see but it is the sport!" Chiles' coach continued. "You don’t have to like it but you do have to respect the outcome and more importantly respect Jordan and not drag her down because you disagree. She EARNED that bronze medal, her 1st individual Olympic medal and I couldn’t be more proud and excited!”
Amid the growing controversy, U.S. and Romanian officials proposed awarding bronze medals to both Chiles and Barbosu, but FIG shut down the idea.
Chiles has since taken a step back from social media.
