Even though Halsey reportedly got Britney Spears' permission to sample her hit song "Lucky" for her new track of the same name, that didn't stop the Princess of Pop from threatening to take legal action.

However, it looks like the "Toxic" singer quickly backtracked on her remarks and dismissed her previous comment as "fake news." Halsey, for her part, did not hesitate to show her support for Britney Spears, reminding the "Crossroads" actress that she served as an inspiration for her own music career.

Fans were shocked to see Britney Spears post a message on Friday night threatening to take legal action against Halsey over her new song, "Lucky," which sampled her original song of the same name.

“For obvious reasons I’m very upset about the Halsey video. I feel harassed, violated, and bullied,” Britney wrote in a screenshot obtained by TMZ. “I didn’t know an artist like her and someone I looked up to and admired would illustrate me in such an ignorant way by tailoring me as a superficial pop star with no heart or concern at all.”

“I have my own health problems which is why I took down my IG account yesterday. I will definitely be putting it back up to show I CARE,” she continued. “I’m speaking with my lawyers today to see what can be done on this matter. It feels illegal and down right [sic] cruel.”

Despite her comments, as of Saturday morning, Britney's Instagram page was still down.

Britney Dismisses Her Own Comments As 'Fake News'

However, within the hour, the "Circus" singer quickly changed her tune and dismissed her own remarks as "fake news." In a new tweet, Britney wrote, "Fake news !!! That was not me on my phone !!! I love Halsey and that’s why I deleted it !!!" Many fans were quick to agree that they doubted the first message was from Britney, who tends to pepper her posts with a lot of punctuation between her sentences, such as "..." and "!!!"

“Queen Britney Spears! No emojis? Not your post!” one fan exclaimed. “What? Did your X get hacked?” another follower asked. “Thank goodness it all worked out in the end, Queen! Whoever that was scared me. We love and support you Queen! You are the Queen of Pop!” a third fan chimed in.

Other followers ventured that the first message might have actually been a PR stunt – with or without Britney’s knowledge – in order to push followers towards Halsey’s video to see if it was really as "cruel" as her post made it seem.
