In an interview for ITV's documentary "Tabloids on Trial," which premiered on July 25, Prince Harry voiced his concerns about his family's safety and expressed his apprehensions about returning to the UK with Meghan.

"It's still dangerous," Harry stated, per People Magazine, emphasizing that "all it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff to act on what they have read."

He continued: "Whether it's a knife or acid, whatever it is, these are things that are of genuine concern for me. It's one of the reasons why I won't bring my wife back to this country."

In 2022, Neil Basu, the former counterterrorism chief for the Metropolitan Police, confirmed that there were credible threats to Meghan's life during her time in the UK.

Harry and Meghan stepped back from their royal duties and moved their family to California in 2020. Since their relocation, the Duke of Sussex has returned to the UK multiple times, including for his father's coronation in May 2023.

However, Meghan has only visited a few times, with her last trip being in September 2022 for Queen Elizabeth's funeral.

Since their eviction from Frogmore Cottage in 2023, the couple has not had a place to stay, and Harry has had to check into hotels during his trips to the country.

Like other senior royals, Harry and Meghan received taxpayer-funded security protection when they were working members of the royal family, but the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec) took away their police protection.

The duke then sued the Home Office in 2020 but was dealt a major blow in February when he lost his bid for his UK security protection to be reinstated as the judge of the London High Court ruled that the initial verdict to strip him off it was "legally sound," and also denied him permission to challenge the ruling at a higher court in April.

According to the BBC, Harry enjoyed a small victory after finally winning the right to appeal the court's ruling in June.

In a statement to the High Court in London at the time, Harry emphasized the necessity of police security for his children, Prince Archie, 5, and Princess Lilibet, 3, to feel "at home" in the UK.

"The UK is my home. The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the United States," he said. "That cannot happen if there is no possibility to keep them safe when they are on UK soil."

He added, "I can't put my wife in danger like that, and given my experiences in life, I'm reluctant to unnecessarily put myself in harm's way too."

During the interview, Harry also spoke about how his battle against the tabloids has been a significant factor in the strain on his family.

Harry, who won his phone hacking lawsuit against Mirror Group Newspapers in December 2023, said, "I think that's certainly a central piece to it. That's a hard question to answer because anything I say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the press."

He added, "I've made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done. It would be nice if we did it as a family. I believe that, again, from a service standpoint and when you're in a public role, that these are the things that we should be doing for the greater good. But I'm doing this for my reasons."

The author added that Charles has made efforts to listen and mediate but has now taken a step back and is "just getting on" with his life.
