Katy Perry is reportedly "freaking out" over the lackluster reception of "Woman's World," the lead single from her upcoming album "143."
She has also come under heavy criticism for choosing to collaborate with controversial producer Dr. Luke, who was accused of abuse by singer Kesha.
Insiders have revealed that Perry ignored all advice not to work with Dr. Luke despite knowing the consequences.
Katy Perry is now allegedly scrambling with her team to adjust the upcoming album to better suit music fans and bring Perry's fans back to the fold.
Katy Perry Is Reportedly Panicking Over Her New Song's Poor Performance
Since its release on July 11, Katy Perry's new song "Woman's World" has been on a downward dive on multiple streaming platforms.
The lackluster performance of the new song reportedly has Perry "freaking out" and worried that the upcoming album "143" will suffer a similar fate.
An insider at Perry's team told the Daily Mail, "Katy is freaking out right now because she is very aware of the feedback that Woman's World is getting. She is pointing the fingers at everyone but herself, but it is her own fault."
Upon its release, "Woman's World" only secured a debut position of No. 110 on the Spotify US chart, gathering 501,000 streams.
On the Spotify global chart, the song did slightly better, debuting at No. 58 with 2.26 million streams. However, in just two days, the song dropped out of both the US and global charts.
Katy Perry Is Adjusting The Album Before Its Release
With the new song's negative reception and poor reviews, Perry is reportedly making major changes to the album before its release, which is only a few months away. The singer is pushing her team to "adjust" the songs and overall project to draw her fans back.
A source said, "Katy is now demanding that they go back to the drawing board ahead of the release of more singles and they are adjusting the album right now in a desperate attempt to salvage her comeback. She should be very grateful that they have three months to do this."
Perry is also reportedly planning to give her fans some control over the songs in the upcoming album. On July 14, the "Dark Horse" singer announced on Stationhead that she's holding a poll for her fans to choose the next single to be released from the project.
'Woman's World' Was Hit With A Wave Of Negative Reviews
Following its release, Perry's single was plagued with negative reviews from critics, many of whom felt the song sounded dated.
According to a Pitchfork review, the song sounded as if Perry "had to have feminism explained to her by the top half of the first page of Google."
They added, "Defying all sense of taste, the pop singer's comeback single is too dispiriting to even approach camp. It's abysmal."
The Guardian also viciously reviewed the song, giving it a one-star rating and comparing it unfavorably to Lady Gaga's 2020 single, "Stupid Love."
They wrote, "Perry's solo return is a dated attempt at writing a feminist anthem about how women really can have it all! It's a song that made me feel stupider every sorry time I listened to it … this garbage has 6 writers."
Collaborating With Dr Luke Was A Mistake
According to the insider, the major problem with the song was Perry's decision to work with producer Dr. Luke.
He was behind her hit singles like "California Gurls" and "I Kissed a Girl." However, Dr. Luke, whose real name is Łukasz Gottwald, dropped out of the scene when singer Kesha accused him of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse.
Dr. Luke had repeatedly denied the allegations made by Kesha, including a claim that he sexually assaulted Perry. The "Teenage Dream" singer herself also denied the claim publicly.
Dr. Luke and Kesha have since settled their case out of court, but many music fans have made it clear that his work is no longer acceptable.
While many fans criticize Perry for working with the controversial producer, some have defended her by saying it was due to contractual obligations. However, this was debunked by her deposition in Kesha's suit from 2018, where Perry stated she only had a three-album publishing deal with Dr. Luke's Kemosabe Records, which had ended.
Katy Perry Was Warned Against Working With Dr. Luke
Perry was reportedly warned not to work with Dr. Luke on any new music projects but ignored the advice.
"She was insane to think that Dr. Luke was a good idea," a source told the Daily Mail. "She didn't listen to anyone. Instead of diving deep and creating art, she put something out that sounded like it could have been on an album of hers from 2010."
During the 2018 deposition, Perry also stated that she was aware of the possible public reception of any future collaborations with Dr. Luke.
She said, "Working with him at this moment would mean - would not be - would not be received well because of this lawsuit."
The "Teenage Dream" singer was also asked her thoughts about how working with Dr. Luke could affect the success of any songs she released. She said, "People would protest against it, a smear campaign, just 20 different narratives than the one that I am."
