At the start of his show, "Saturday Night Live" alum Seth Meyers addressed the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, which occurred at a rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
As The Blast reported, the 78-year-old Presidential candidate was speaking at a rally for all of 10 minutes before shots popped off, with one bullet nearly missing his head and, instead, grazed his right ear.
Several political figures spoke out after the incident, asking for the country to unite, including Joe Biden, who said, "We cannot go down this road."
Days later, comedian Seth Meyers broke his silence, calling the attempted assassination of Donald Trump a "poison to democracy."
Seth Meyers On The Attempted Assassination Of Donald Trump
On Monday, Seth Meyers spoke out about the terrifying incident that occurred at the Donald Trump rally this weekend, telling the audience, “Political violence must be rejected in all its forms. It is both morally wrong and a poison to democracy."
"We must condemn and repudiate it and do everything in our power to stop it," he added.
The 50-year-old then recalled what it was like to prepare for his show after the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol. “I said then that multiracial, pluralistic democracy is fragile, precious. It requires our vigilance, stewardship, and protection. That’s as true now as it was then,” he said. “It’s clear we must recommit ourselves to that endeavor as fully and steadfastly as we can.”
Attempted Assassination Of Donald Trump Prompts Gun Control Conversations
Once again, gun laws are being talked about as the weapon, an AR-style rifle used in the shooting over the weekend, was legally purchased by the suspect's, Thomas Matthew Crooks, father.
I think it’s important to say that the easy availability of dangerous weapons has made tragedies like this all too common," the comedian added. "We cannot accept that. There are too many guns, they are too easy to get and we must work to change that."
“[The older generations] protected democracy and passed it on to us,” the "Saturday Night Live" alum added. “They witnessed political violence, from assassinations to campaigns of racist terror, to attempted coups and they refused to succumb to a society where reason and humanity have failed, where violence rules. They built something better, and now it is our task to hold on to it.”
Joe Biden Asks America To 'Lower The Temperature'
At the Oval Office on Sunday, President Joe Biden urged the nation to “lower the temperature in our politics” following the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, adding that he feared for the direction of the country’s politics, per the New York Times.
“We cannot, we must not go down this road in America,” he said. "There is no place in America for this kind of violence, for any violence, ever. Period. No exceptions. We can’t allow this violence to be normalized.”
“The power to change America should always rest in the hands of the people, not in the hands of a would-be assassin," the President of the United States said.
The Country Must 'Unite' After Donald Trump Rally Shooting
The President of the United States also called on Americans to “unite as one nation."
“Unity is the most elusive goal of all. Nothing is more important than that right now,” he said when addressing the nation. “Unity. We’ll debate and we’ll disagree. That’s not going to change. But we’re going to not lose sight of the fact of who we are as Americans.”
Ivanka Trump Breaks Silence On Father's Rally Shooting
Ivanka Trump, the daughter of former President Donald Trump, broke her silence after her father was shot at the rally. "I love you dad," Trump’s eldest daughter said before thanking the people “for your love and prayers for my father and for the other victims of today’s senseless violence in Butler, Pennsylvania."
She added that she is “grateful to the Secret Service and all the other law enforcement officers for their quick and decisive actions today. I continue to pray for our country.”
Former First Lady Melania Trump also spoke out, calling the shooter a "monster who recognized my husband as an inhuman political machine attempted to ring out Donald's passion."
