American singer and actress Demi Lovato has sparked public backlash after saying that gender reveal parties are "transphobic."
Lovato shared a nine-page Instagram post earlier this week and in it, she expressed strong opinions against the soirées - where soon-to-be parents announce their baby's gender using an item unveiled in pink or blue.
The controversial post was initially shared online by a trans activist, who enforced that basing a baby's gender on their genitalia is biased and 'inconsistent with science.' The text images asserted that it is insincere that gender reveal parties are not transphobic.
You Cannot Eat Your Proverbial Cake And Have It
The text continued that people can't eat their "proverbial pink-blue binary cake" and still have it. It then criticized gender reveals and stated that it wasn't correct, not because of identities but because of their reality.
The "Sorry Not Sorry" singer's report stated that gender reveal parties gave credence to the idea that trans people are less 'natural/organic' than everybody else.
The post continued that being transphobic is more than being discriminated against trans people, but it also thinks that trans people are not natural.
Genital Does Not Equal Gender- Demi Lovato
The post stated that the ideas fueled and justified the mistreatment of trans and gender non-conforming people, which is frowned on in many parts of the world.
The post continued that gender reveals based on the illusions that genitals equal gender and can only be two options.
By retrospect, "the definition erases that there are boys with vaginas and girls with penis, and there are people who are non-conforming to a gender," the post stated. Social media users were quick to shut Lovato down by openly disagreeing with her post.
Twitter Fans' Reactions
One user tweeted that the world has gone mental so much that Hasbro had to change Mr. Potato's head to appear gender-neutral.
Another user wrote to Lovato that she should stay out of expectant parents' businesses if they wished to know the sex of their child as it has nothing to do with transphobia.
The user went on to educate the singer that boys do not have vagina, nor girls penis. He also asked that trans people do what they want with their children.
Transgender: Are People Born Cis Or Trans?
The 28-year-old singer's post argued that gender reveals not only invalidates transness, it also makes it seem like an impossibility.
The soirée assumes that the baby is cis, trans is an identity someone picks up later in life, but that everyone was born cis.
The post then said that even though trans people are accustomed to being engendered by other people, it doesn't make it right, as only individuals can determine their gender. Lovato's message called for gender reveal parties to be scraped because their discriminatory of trans people.
