Harrison Butker's Speech Goes Viral

Butker, a kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs and teammates with Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, delivered a speech at Benedictine College. The speech went viral, but not for the best reasons due to his views on gender roles, the LGBTQ community, and politics.

"Bad policies and poor leadership" had "negatively impacted major life issues," Butker said in his speech, seemingly bashing President Joe Biden. "Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for degenerative cultural values in media all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder."

"We cannot buy into the lie that the things we experienced during COVID were appropriate," Butker added. "Over the centuries, there have been great wars, great famines, and yes, even great diseases, all that came with a level of lethality and danger. But in each of those examples, Church leaders leaned into their vocations and ensured that their people received the sacraments."

After the speech, the official Kansas City X account shared a post that led to an employee's firing.

“The city has separated from the employee who is responsible for the message,” Quinton Lucas, the mayor of Kansas City, said. “I think that to me, in many ways, resolves the back and forth that’s in the political world. I think there has been accountability from the City of Kansas City. We all look forward to moving on [and] let the Chiefs play.”

As a reminder, the former employee shared an X post that read, “Just a reminder that Harrison Butker lives in the City of Lee’s Summit,” shortly after the NFL player’s controversial commencement speech went viral.

The post was deleted shortly thereafter.

Before it was deleted, Attorney General Andrew Bailey saw the post and responded, “My office is demanding accountability after @KansasCity doxxed @buttkicker7 last night for daring to express his religious beliefs. I will enforce the Missouri Human Rights Act to ensure Missourians are not targeted for their free exercise of religion.”

In addition to politics, Butker also spoke on gender roles, seemingly telling women they should be "homemakers."

“I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you,” he said in his speech. “How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career?"

"Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world," the NFL star continued.

Butker also praised his wife Isabelle, claiming she “would be the first to say her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother.”

"I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: Homemaker," he added.

Days after the speech went viral, Butker's teammate and Kansas City Chiefs player Patrick Mahomes broke his silence.

"I know Harrison. I've known him for seven years and I judge him by the character that he shows every single day and that's a good person," he said. "That's someone who cares about the people around him, cares about his family and wants to make a good impact in society. When you're in a locker room, there's a lot of people from many different areas in life and they have a lot of different views on everything."

Mahomes added, "We're not always going to agree, and there's certain things that he said that I don't necessarily agree with, but I understand the person that he is, and he is trying to do whatever he can to lead people in the right direction."
