'The Princess Diaries' actress Anne Hathaway has revealed she is over five years sober, which she says is a huge milestone as she enters her 40s.
The Oscar winner is currently promoting her upcoming film adaptation of Robinne Lee's book The Idea of You and was asked about her thoughts on "middle age."
Anne Hathaway Reflects On Life As She Enters Her 40s
The actress, who will be turning 42 later this year, opened up about life in her 40s and how certain milestones have shaped who she is today.
"There are so many other things I identify as milestones. I don't normally talk about it, but I am over five years sober," Hathaway told The New York Times, who celebrated her 40th birthday in 2022. "That feels like a milestone to me. Forty feels like a gift. The fact of the matter is I hesitate at calling things 'middle age' simply because I can be a semantic stickler, and I could get hit by a car later today."
She added, "We don't know if this is middle age. We don't know anything."
Anne Hathaway Talks Sobriety
While she doesn't talk about it much, she revealed her sobriety in 2019 on 'The Ellen DeGeneres Show.' The actress said she had come to the decision a few months prior to stop drinking for 18 years.
"I'm gonna stop drinking while my son's living in my house," she said at the time. "I don't totally love the way I [drink] and he's getting to an age where he really does need me all the time in the mornings."
She added, "I did one school run one day where I dropped him off at school. I wasn't driving, but I was hungover, and that was enough for me. I didn't love that one."
Anne Hathaway Says She Doesn't Have A Drinking Problem
The 'Ella Enchanted' star also spoke to Modern Luxury about her decision, claiming she does not have a problem with alcohol, but it was a personal decision.
"I didn't put [a drink] down because my drinking was a problem; I put it down because the way I drink leads me to have hangovers and those were the problem. My last hangover lasted for five days."
Hathaway continued, "When I'm at a stage in my life where there is enough space for me to have a hangover, I'll start drinking again, but that won't be until my kid is out of the house."
Anne Hathaway Can Quote Every Line From 'Billy Madison'
To end the New York Times interview, Hathaway wanted to tell a lighthearted and funny story, where she revealed her guilty pleasure of watching 'Billy Madison' and 'Happy Gilmore.'
"You know what? When I was making 'The Idea of You,' I was so spoiled, staying in a beautiful house in Atlanta, Georgia, that was much larger than my needs," she told the outlet. "I would get home from work, and I’d be in this house by myself, and that was giving me the heebie-jeebies. I was trying to figure out, like, why was I feeling this so intensely? And I realized there was no laughter in the house. You have a big house like that, you need laughter. So I started to listen to stand-up specials."
She added, "I would come home and put them on. I got really into Adam Sandler’s '100% Fresh.' As extraordinary, beloved, and iconic as Adam Sandler is, I think he’s underappreciated. I can quote you every line from 'Billy Madison,' and 'Happy Gilmore,' and 'The Wedding Singer.'"
Anne Hathaway Is Open To 'The Princess Diaries 3'
Fans of 'The Princess Diaries' movies have been begging for a third film for years. While many details are being kept under wraps, Hathaway did tell Variety, "We're in a good place. That's all I can say. There's nothing to announce yet. But we're in a good place."
She was also asked about the possibility of a third film by The New York Times, where she stated that things were moving along with the movie, but she didn't share any specific details.
Julie Andrews, however, will likely not be part of the project. "I think we know that it's probably not going to be possible," the 88-year-old told PEOPLE.
