An "active situation" left "numerous" police officers shot in an incident in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Monday, April 29.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department says the incident is still an "active situation." A SWAT team was on the scene.

'Active Situation' In Charlotte, North Carolina

Sources have told Channel 9 that a deputy U.S. Marshal was killed, but it is unknown exactly how many people were injured or what the nature of their injuries is. Police have confirmed that "multiple" officers were transported to the hospital.

Channel 9 also reports that a spokesperson at the Atrium Health Hospital in Uptown said a mass casualty response had been called.

At the time of the shooting, the U.S. Marshals Task Force had been conducting an investigation in the area "when they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject," police said, per ABC.

CMPD Confirms Multiple Officers Have Been Shot

Around 2:08 p.m., the police department said multiple victims had been transported to nearby hospitals. "Gunfire continues on scene. More information to come from CMPD's Public Affairs Office," it said at the time.

At 2:16 p.m., the CMPD stated, "Numerous law enforcement officers struck by gunfire in [an] active situation in the 5000 block of Galway Drive. The scene is still active. Avoid the area. Many roads are closed for faster ambulance transport. Please cooperate with [the] authorities. Media staging at 6212 The Plaza at the Family Dollar store."

US Marshals Task Force Is Investigating The Incident

CMPD stated at approximately 2:45 p.m.: "The US Marshals Task Force, which is comprised of officers from multiple agencies, was conducting an investigation in the area of the 5000 block of Galway Dr when they were engaged by active gunfire from a subject. Multiple law enforcement officers have been struck by the gunfire and are being transported to the hospital. The CMPD SWAT team is currently on the scene."

At 3:10 p.m., CMPD confirmed it is still an active scene, and roads are still blocked. It also confirmed that active gunfire is on the scene.

At 3:26 p.m. CMPD said the department and other law enforcement agencies "are still involved on an active scene in the Galway Drive area. More information will be released in a media briefing that will take place as soon as the situation stabilizes."

This shooting occurred one day before the five-year anniversary of the UNC Charlotte mass shooting.

On April 30, 2019, a man with a pistol walked into a classroom at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and opened fire. Two people were fatally shot, and several others were injured. This occurred on the last day of classes.

According to The New York Times, the police disarmed the suspect and took him into custody at a building on campus The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department identified the suspect as Trystan Andrew Terrell, who was 22 at the time.

Mr. Terrell was charged with two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm on an educational property and discharging a firearm on an educational property.

“We are in shock to learn of an active shooter situation on the campus of UNC Charlotte,” Vi Lyles, the mayor of Charlotte, said shortly after the tragedy “My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives, those injured, the entire UNCC community and the courageous first responders who sprang into action to help others.”

Governor Roy Cooper of North Carolina said “This is a tough day, but this university will get through it. One thing I do know is a student should not have to fear for his or her life when they are on our campuses.”
