How Prince Harry Revealed 'Irritation' At King Charles With His U.S. Residency Starting Date

Prince Harry officially changed his residency to the U.S., reflecting a departure from the U.K.

In what seems like an intentional move to make a statement, the Duke of Sussex used the date of his eviction from Frogmore Cottage as the start of his U.S. residency.

However, despite the significant changes, rumors suggest Harry may join the Royal Family for the summer holidays at Balmoral, hinting at reconciliation.

Harry recently updated his official business records to reflect his new residency status in the United States of America, signaling a departure from his previous status as a resident of the United Kingdom.

While the change was made official this week, Harry opted to mark the start of his U.S. residency as June 29, 2023, the day he and his wife, Meghan Markle, vacated Frogmore Cottage, rather than the date of his initial emigration in early 2020.

Speaking to the DailyMail, royal biographer Tom Bower suggests that this decision points to Harry's frustration with his father and suggests a prolonged stay in the U.S. He believes King Charles was justified in asking Harry to leave Frogmore and hopes that the King will reconsider his approach to the Sussexes in the future.

"King Charles was quite right to evict Harry from Frogmore, and not surprisingly, Harry was irritated. He and Meghan thought they could have their cake and eat it," Bower said. "Unfortunately, the King did not go further and strip the Sussexes of their titles. That might have stopped their recent promotional splurge, exploiting their royal titles to earn money. Hopefully, when the King recovers, he will reconsider his attitude towards the Sussexes and distance them further from the royal family."

Bower concluded, "He should now be firmly told by the King to stop exploiting his royal titles for commercial profit."

Royal author Angela Levin also suggested that Harry's change in residency status should disqualify him from serving as a Counsellor of State "to stand in for the monarch should it be needed."

As per U.K. regulations, Counselors of State must maintain a residence in the U.K. However, Harry lacks a U.K. domicile since King Charles requested the Sussexes to vacate Frogmore Cottage.

Until 2022, the Counselors included Queen Camilla, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew, and Princess Beatrice. However, the parliament later added Princess Anne and Prince Edward to the list due to concerns over Harry, Andrew, and Beatrice as non-working royals.

Despite discussions to remove Harry and Andrew from the Counselors of State list, Charles reportedly declined to avoid additional family tensions. However, recent events, including the King's cancer treatment, have heightened the urgency of the situation.

As part of his estrangement from his homeland as a working royal, Harry contested the Home Office's decision to revoke his automatic Metropolitan Police protection while in the U.K., despite offering to cover the expenses himself.

Following the ruling against him, Harry's legal representative stated that he couldn't safely return home to the U.K. with his family as it was too dangerous.

The court's decision, which Harry lost, may result in him facing a hefty bill of £1 million [$1.2 million], including legal costs, and despite the Duke's attempt to halve the amount, a judge said Harry had "comprehensively lost" his case. On another application where Harry tried to appeal the ruling, the judge dismissed it, deeming it "frankly hopeless."

Despite the ongoing tension, there are rumors that Charles plans to extend an invitation to Harry and Meghan Markle to join the Royal Family for the summer holidays at Balmoral. This is a tradition where various family members gather in the Scottish Highlands.

While speaking to TheMirror, PR expert Ryan McCormick suggested that this gesture could serve as a positive step towards reconciliation between Harry, Meghan, and the royal household.

"In observing the recent public behavior of Charles and Harry, it seems that the two want to move toward reconciliation," McCormick claimed.

The news of Harry's residency in the U.S. comes after he hinted at the possibility of considering U.S. citizenship, a decision that could potentially lead to the relinquishment of his titles.

While discussing the matter on "Good Morning America" in February, Harry said the "thought" has crossed his mind, but it's "not a high priority right now."

However, after the recent residency filing, the pressure on the Biden administration to disclose Harry's visa records has intensified following remarks by the American ambassador to London, implying that Harry wouldn't face deportation during Biden's presidency.

Campaigners, including the Heritage Foundation, have urged the Department of Homeland Security to release Harry's file under America's freedom of information laws, particularly after the Duke of Sussex made revelations about his past drug use in his memoir, "Spare" — an admission that can reportedly block a visa application in the U.S.
