The man who played "Bozo the Clown" on the popular children's program in the 1960s has died after his family said he battled heart disease.

Frank Avruch died Tuesday at his home in Boston at the age of 89-years-old, according to his family. He played the famous clown from 1959-1970 and was the first nationally-syndicated version of Bozo.

He also toured the world performing as Bozo for UNICEF, and was known for being a big philanthropist.

Avruch is survived by his wife Betty, two sons Matthew and Steven and several red noses.
