Following the media coverage surrounding Olivia Rodrigo's condom and Plan B handouts, abortion organizations are no longer allowed to hand out free emergency birth control pills, or other emergency contraceptives at the singer’s concerts.
During her Missouri concert, Rodrigo teamed up with the Missouri Abortion Fund to hand out free condoms and Plan B to support women’s reproductive rights. Some, however, took offense to this and the backlash has now forced abortion organizations to no longer provide resources to Rodrigo's concerts.
Olivia Rodrigo Is No Longer Allowed To Hand Out Emergency Contraceptives
According to organizers who spoke with Variety, after the media attention Rodrigo has gained for handing out condoms and Plan B at her Missouri concert, local abortion funds are "no longer allowed to hand out free emergency birth control pills and other reproductive health resources at the concerts."
The decision surprisingly enough came from Rodrigo’s team.
Jade Hurley, the communications manager for the DC Abortion Fund, said Rodrigo’s team preferred they no longer pass out any emergency contraceptives because “children are present at the concerts.”
This is something many fans have brought up on social media, including one user who recently called out Olivia Rodrigo for handing out the items at concerts “that are mostly attended by young women and kids.”
Olivia Rodrigo's Handouts Are 'Completely Legal'
Although the former Disney Channel actress and the abortion organizations will no longer be handing out lubrication, condoms, or Plan B, Hurley said Rodrigo did nothing illegal.
“The reality is that youth have sex, and youth need access to birth control and emergency contraception,” Hurley told Variety over the phone. “What we’re doing is completely legal in all 50 states.”
Some Disagree With The Ban
Destini Spaeth, chair of the Prairie Abortion Fund, strongly disagrees with the decision. “There is something really positive about a 16- or 15-year-old having a Plan B and a few condoms in her dresser to use as she needs it," she told Variety.
Adding, “Sex and sexual health tools — whether that be abortion, Plan B, condoms — are villainized because you’re [seen as being] promiscuous. We don’t look at it as a sign of responsibility. … If the kids aren’t getting the education that they need in school, at least they can rely on reproductive health organizations in their communities to get that information and resources to them.”
Prairie Abortion Fund will have a booth at Rodrigo’s upcoming concert, which will take place in St. Paul, Minnesota on Friday, March 15.
Growing Concerns Off Children Being Exposed To S-xual Health Resources
Right by You founder Stephanie Kraft Sheley spoke to Variety regarding concerns of children being exposed to s-xual health resources, saying that "the idea that we haven’t been thoughtful or careful in carrying out our work at this event, or any event, is just incorrect.”
“Our position is that it does not hurt a young person to see us out in the community doing that work,” she added, claiming that "it was very normal to see a younger child walk up with curiosity with their parent and have the parent explain to them what’s on the table and why we’re here."
She further clarified that "We’re not having children walk up and grab things off the table that aren’t for children.”
Olivia Rodrigo Receives Backlash Over Condom Handouts
The 'Good 4 U' singer has received some praise from fans, but also a backlash from "extremists", which Hurley says is “disappointing."
It is "causing a moral panic over something they don’t even understand,” Hurley told the outlet. “They don’t know the difference between emergency contraception [like Plan B] and the abortion pill, which are two completely different things.”
Adding, “Extremists are purposefully conflating the two to restrict access and shame minors out of getting the resources they needs. … Their agenda is just control and power over autonomy, and they always go after young people first.”
Olivia Rodrigo Remains Mum
Olivia Rodrigo has yet to comment on the situation. She has, however, previously slammed the Supreme Court justices when they voted to overturn Roe v. Wade, calling them out by name at a concert.
The singer has since promised to donate a portion of her concert ticket proceeds to her non-profit, Fund 4 Good.
