Jimmy Kimmelkicked off the 2024 Oscars with a lengthy monologue, and fans of the awards show were not happy about it.

The nighttime talk show host returned to host the 96th Oscars ceremony, making it the fourth time Kimmel has been given this honor. He previously hosted in 2017, 2018, and 2022. As you may recall, the 2017 Oscars were when the infamous “La La Land” and “Moonlight” best picture screw-up occurred.

When the Academy announced Kimmel as host for this year's Oscars, fans immediately let their opinions be known -- and now that the show has kicked off, the hate continues to flood social media.

Jimmy Kimmel Roasted For 2024 Oscars Monologue

Despite Kimmel hosting last year’s awards show, which seemed to have excited fans as the 2023 Oscars ratings saw a bump in viewership (recording an average audience of 18.8 total million viewers — a 13% increase from the previous figures) this year it seems fans have had enough with the late-night talk show host.

Shortly after Kimmel wrapped his opener, his name began trending on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, and not for a good reason. In fact, he was being slammed for the monologue, with many stating it was boring, too long, and simply, not funny.

Dog Steals The Show During Jimmy Kimmel's Monologue

One user shared a photo of the dog that made an appearance during Kimmel's monologue, claiming it was the best part of his opener.

The dog was involved in the monologue as Kimmel was discussing Robert Downey Jr.’s Hollywood redemption story, claiming he is at “one of the highest points of his career.”

"20 years ago, Robert played the villain, and correct me if I have this wrong, in a movie where Tim Allen turns into a dog, right? And if you ever decide to remake that film, I have just the guy to play Tim Allen. That is — where is he? Messi," Kimmel said as the television focused on the dog. "Even though he’s a dog, may have given the performance of the year in ‘Anatomy of a Fall.’ He has an overdose scene. I haven’t seen a French actor each vomit like that since Gérard Depardieu.”

The hate continued to take over X as one user shared a GIF of Spongebob Squarepants standing on stage as the crowd looked on, seemingly bored out of their minds.

One user said, "Jimmy Kimmel comedy is like waiting in line at a government agency."

"Somebody get Jimmy Kimmel off that stage," another Oscar viewer wrote.

Jimmy Kimmel Speaks on Greta Gerwig's Oscars Snub

During his opening bit, the host of the awards show joked about how “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig did not get a best director nod -- something many claim was an Oscar snub.

"Now Barbie is a feminist icon, thanks to Greta Gerwig, who many believed deserved to be nominated for best director tonight. Hold on a second. I know you’re clapping, but you’re the ones who didn’t vote for her, by the way. Don’t act like you had nothing to do with this," Kimmel said during his monologue.

Another Oscars viewer wrote, "Jimmy Kimmel please get off the stage."

Fans Think Jimmy Kimmel's Opening Monologue Was A Disaster

Jimmy Kimmel also took time to comment on the length of films during 2023, stating, "There were so many great movies that held audiences captive this year and I mean that literally. Your movies were too long this year. The average length of the top ten movies was 2 hours and 23 minutes. That’s up 30 minutes from three years ago."

He added, "When I went to see ‘Killers of the Flower Moon,’ I had my mail sent to the theater. It’s so long, you could drive to Oklahoma and solve the murders yourself.”
