Meghan Markle's "Suits" co-star, Rick Hoffman, claims a "foul smell" is what caused his infamous meme from the Duchess' 2018 wedding to Prince Harry.
Hoffman, who played Louis Marlowe Litt in the legal drama, said his disgusted expression was because of a smell, which only he perceived amongst the guests close to him.
According to two royal biographers, Meghan wasn't happy with the smell of St. George's Chapel and tried to mask it with multiple diffusers.
Rick Hoffman Claims There Was A 'Foul Smell' At Meghan Markle's Royal Wedding
During a recent interview on the "Chicks in the Office" podcast, Hoffman finally revealed the story behind his infamous disgusted meme from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wedding in 2018. He said, "If you type in my name in on Google you see [me] making that awful face."
Hoffman explained that shortly after he took his seat in St. George's Chapel, he "started to smell something really terrible and foul."
The actor said he initially thought another guest close by "had a terrible breath," but he quickly realized the smell was from "more than one person."
He added, "I'm starting to get a little jittery because it's bothering me, and I'm very sensitive when it comes to that. [The ceremony] is an hour-and-a-half, and [the smell] is just constantly coming my way now. It's getting into my body."
Rick Hoffman Was The Only One Who Smelled It
Hoffman explained that he's very "particular when it comes to hygiene," so he was worried people would think he was the cause of the "foul" odor.
The actor revealed on the podcast that he asked his fellow "Suits" co-stars, who were sitting close by if they could also smell the bad scent in the air, and they said that they could not.
He said, "So now I'm like literally by myself alone on an island, and I'm just going, "Motherf------." And that's [the expression] they got [on camera that went viral]."
Hoffman also shared that Meghan was the only cast member who laughed and teased him about his problems with "other people's hygiene."
Meghan Markle Allegedly Tried To Conceal A Smell In The Chapel She Married
According to two Royal biographers, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, Meghan was aware of a weird smell in the Chapel where she married Harry.
In their book "Finding Freedom," the authors claimed that Meghan wasn't happy with the smell and tried to do something about it.
The Duchess of Sussex reportedly insisted on masking the scent with air fresheners and diffusers before the big day. Initial reports claimed that the Palace denied Meghan's request before the wedding, but Scobie and Durand corrected this rumor in their book.
The duo wrote that the Palace actually approved the scent products from Diptyque Baies. However, from Hoffman's reaction, claims, and the infamous meme, the high-end products failed to mask the smell.
'Suits' Is Getting A Spin-off: 'Suits: LA'
Hoffman's revelation about the story behind his infamous meme comes shortly after the announcement of "Suits" getting a spin-off series. Last year, the legal drama shocked everyone by becoming the highest-streamed show after joining Netflix, holding the top position for 12 weeks.
Now, it's been confirmed that the spin-off show, titled "Suits: LA," will be coming to Netflix. It's set in the same world as the original TV show but has entirely new characters. The lead is a former federal prosecutor from New York named Ted Black, played by Stephen Amell, who represents the most powerful clients in Los Angeles.
The official synopsis reads, "His firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career. Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can't help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved."
Since the announcement of the "Suits" spin-off, it has been speculated that Meghan would appear in it, but reports have confirmed that the duchess will not be a part of the new show.
