Singer Britney Spears and actor Sam Asghari still have not officially ended their marriage even though the "Special Ops: Lioness" actor filed for divorce last August.
The former couple met on the set of her "Slumber Party" music video in 2016 and started dating soon after. He popped the question in September 2021, two months before her controversial conservatorship ended in November 2021. They tied the knot less than a year later, in June 2022.
However, according to court documents obtained by The Blast, the 29-year-old actor filed for divorce from the 42-year-old pop star in August 2023, but listed July 2023 as the official date of separation, months before her memoir "The Woman In Me" was released last October.
The Reason Why Britney Spears and Sam Asghari Haven't Divorced Yet
While Britney Spears continues to travel the globe, Sam Asghari is getting his acting career off the ground. On January 8, he posed on the red carpet for the Young Hollywood and the Breakout Stars of 2023 in Los Angeles. A few days later, he shared a photo of him posing alongside “Fight Club” actor Brad Pitt at a Beverly Hills gallery exhibition.
Sources told the US Sun earlier this month that Sam is still using Britney’s name to score invites to major Hollywood events. “She feels Sam is playing the ‘Mr. Britney Spears’ card for everything it’s worth and she finds it kind of pathetic,” a source told Us Weekly. The source went on to say that, although the two had signed an ironclad prenup before the divorce, the marriage has not officially ended because Sam wants more money.
“Sam feels he should be compensated properly for everything he went through with Britney,” one insider told the outlet. “The exact amount he wants is being kept confidential, but he’s not happy with what Britney and her team have proposed.”
A second source went on to claim that “Sam is going for everything under the sun.” However, The Blast investigated the matter and found that Sam has not formally filed anything to request more money or to contest the prenup. Therefore, it looks like most of the divorce is playing out behind closed doors between their respective lawyers.
Britney Is Reportedly No Longer Paying Sam's Rent
Last year, a source told the magazine that Sam would get one million dollars for every two years of marriage while waiving the rights to her music catalog, as per the terms of the prenup. The marriage also required him to sign an NDA. It is worth noting that Britney has an estimated worth of $60 million, even though she recently revealed that she has no plans to return to the entertainment industry.
One insider told the publication that a possible settlement between the former couple is “stuck in limbo,” adding, “There’s a lot of wrangling back and forth. Things have become a lot more complicated than both of them had hoped it would be.”
Although Britney was reportedly coughing up ten thousand dollars each month to pay for his luxurious Los Angeles apartment, a source told Us Weekly that is no longer the case and Sam is paying his own rent.
“Britney is in no mood to be pushed around or rushed into signing over another huge check to Sam,” the source claimed. “She wants to stick to the letter of the paperwork and feels that’s all he’s entitled to, period.”
Both Britney Spears and Sam Asghari Are Reportedly Looking To 'Move On'
It makes sense that the “Toxic” singer would want to stick to the terms of their initial agreement, as her father, Jamie Spears, allegedly paid himself at least $6 million while acting as her conservatorship. Britney’s legal team that he also spent more than $30 million of her earnings on legal fees associated with her 13-year conservatorship.
“Britney is still deeply resentful over how much money certain family members have managed to mooch off of her through the years,” the insider went on to say, noting that Britney reportedly paid former backup dancer Kevin Federline $1.3 million dollars during their divorce in 2007.
Although Sam initially agreed to the prenup, it seems that he has since changed his mind. “Sam isn’t hurting for cash, but he’s willing to dig in and fight for the extra money he feels he deserves,” the source claimed, noting that Sam and Britney are not on speaking terms, as they are letting their lawyers handle everything.
“They’ve exchanged pleasantries, but generally they don’t talk,” the source claimed. “It’s difficult with this situation being unresolved, plus both of them are keen to put the marriage behind them and move on with their lives.”
