Marlena Shaw, best known for her hit 'California Soul' has passed away, according to her daughter.

The American jazz, blues, and soul singer was 81 years of age.

She is known for her hit songs such as 'California Soul', 'Woman of the Ghetto', Go Away, Little Boy', Yu-Ma / Go Away Little Boy', Feel Like Makin' Love,' and more.

Marlena Shaw's Daughter Says The Jazz Singer Passed Away 'Peacefully'

"Hello everyone, it is with a very heavy heart that I announce that our beloved mother, your beloved icon and artist, has passed away today," Shaw's daughter said in a Facebook video.

"She was peaceful. We were at peace. Our family again is at peace. She went very peacefully," she added.

Verve Records spoke out following the news, sharing, "We are saddened by the passing of Marlena Shaw, a wonderful singer whose 'California Soul' is as popular today as it ever was and whose album 'It Is Love: Recorded Live At Vine St.' helped relaunch the Verve label in 1987."

The artist became popular in the 1960s and 1970s thanks to her soulful performances of 'California Soul' and 'Feel Like Makin' Love.'

Another social media user stated, "I had no idea that this great song came out in 1969 from her album, the spice of life. Remembering singer #MarlenaShaw. Who has died at the age of 81."

Fans Pay Tribute To Marlena Shaw

One user took to X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, writing, "Another icon lost… Renowned for her unique and versatile singing style that effortlessly merged genres, Marlena Shaw leaves behind an indelible mark on the music industry. Thoughts are with her friends and family."

One fan wrote, "So sorry to hear that Jazz icon Marlena Shaw has passed away. What a powerhouse of soul, sass and tenderness! Such a powerful legacy she leaves behind. Deepest condolences to her family and loved ones."

Another thanked her for her music, writing, "RIP Marlena Shaw (September 22, 1939- January 19, 2024) and thank you for the music."

"Very sad, great singer RIP Marlena Shaw (born Marlina Burgess, September 22, 1942 – January 19, 2024)," another said.

Meanwhile, one user wrote, "Rest In Peace Marlena Shaw. You will know her voice, you should all know her name!
