Martin Short Breaks His Silence On Meryl Streep Dating Rumors

Martin Short is addressing the romance rumors surrounding him and his 'Only Murders In The Building' co-star Meryl Streep.

The two star on the Hulu series together, and fans began speculating that Streep, 74, and Short, 73, were in a secret relationship. These rumors were fueled after Streep and Short were spotted together at the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7.

Streep and Short were sitting at the same table as their fellow 'OMITB' star Selena Gomez at the big Hollywood event.

After news struck that Streep, 74, has been separated from her husband for over six years, people began speculating that she was hooking up with her 'OMITB' co-star, Martin Short.

"Are Meryl Streep and Martin Short dating… because if that’s true… that’s like Gene Wilder and Gilda Radner multiplied by Mel Brooks and Anne Bancroft," writer and podcaster Louis Virtel wrote on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, during the 2024 Golden Globes.

Another fan shared a photo of the two at the 2024 Golden Globes, writing, "Martin Short and Meryl Streep are my everything<3."

As one social media user said, "I need someone to talk to about these Meryl Streep/Martin Short dating rumors, this is truly my Roman Empire I swear."

Although Meryl Streep and Martin Short are no longer married to their respective spouses -- Meryl separated from her husband over six years ago while Martin lost his wife in 2010 to ovarian cancer -- a source has shut down the romance rumors and claims that the duo is not an item and that they are both still single.

A rep for Martin Short confirmed that "Martin and Meryl are NOT dating, and are just very good friends -- nothing more."

In 2010, Martin Short lost his wife, actress Nancy Dolman, to ovarian cancer. "So it's tough. She died in 2010, but I still communicate with her all the time. It's 'Hey Nan,' you know?" he stated in 2019 of his late wife. "How would she react to this decision or that, especially regarding our three kids."

And, in October 2023, it was confirmed that Meryl Streep and her husband, Don Gummer, have been separated for over six years. “Don Gummer and Meryl Streep have been separated for more than 6 years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart,” a representative for the actress said in a statement to PEOPLE.

Meryl and Don have not been seen publicly together since the 2018 Oscars.

The three-time Oscar winner joined the third season of Hulu's hit show, 'Only Murders In The Building', alongside returning stars Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez.

After news broke that Meryl Streep was joining the show, Martin Short spoke out on what filming with the 'Mamma Mia' actress was like admitting he was "nervous" at first.

“I will tell you honestly, I’ve known Meryl a little bit through the years, but on the first day of shooting, I was a little unusually nervous for me, because I was thinking, ‘I’m doing a two-person scene with Meryl Streep,'” Short told the crowd at a screening at Academy Museum.

A fourth season of 'Only Murders In The Building' is currently in the works.
