Former NBA Star Marcus Camby Puts Blame for His Nephew's Death on His Sister, Boy's Grandmother and Aunt

Former NBA star Marcus Camby says he is not responsible for his 9-year-old nephew's drowning at his Texas mansion and instead puts the blame on his own sister for not watching her son.

Marcus McGhee – who was diagnosed with autism – traveled to Texas with his mother/Marcus' sister, Mia Camby, for Thanksgiving in 2016. While at the home, McGhee got lost and was later found after drowning in a man-made unfenced pond at the NBA star’s home.

Camby was sued earlier this year by his nephew’s father, also named Marcus McGhee, accusing Camby of being responsible for his son’s death.

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Camby has now responded by claiming he is in no way responsible for his nephew’s death. He argues that he had no legal responsibility for the incident under Texas law and says it was "a terrible, tragic and unnecessary death of a young boy ... who was part of Camby’s own family."

Camby points out that Marcus' caretakers — his mother, aunt, and grandmother — were all present on the day of the drowning and says they "failed to properly supervise, monitor and control the activities of Marcus."

Camby is asking a judge to throw out the suit. A judge has yet to rule.
