Ryan O'Neal's Son Griffin Claims He Was 'Hated' By His Late Father

The drama surrounding the O'Neal family has been going on for years, with the "Love Story" actor having a close and rocky relationship with some of his children. His eldest son, Griffin, in particular, has been vocal about the duo's estrangement over his difficult childhood.

The father and son do not appear to have resolved their differences before his death, as Griffin claimed he was shunned from the icon's funeral. According to him, he wasn't invited because of his past comments about his family's dark history.

Griffin is not the only one with a bone to pick with Ryan over his funeral. The veteran actor was buried next to his former lover, the late actress Farrah Fawcett, in Los Angeles — However, her friends claim this action disrespected her final wishes.

Fawcett's pals, per Daily Mail, claimed she wished to be cremated and have her ashes returned to Texas. Instead, Ryan ignored her last request and buried her in LA for his twisted narrative. The late entertainer's University of Texas sweetheart lamented:

"She never wanted a burial or a monument where people could come gawk at her. Ryan created this narrative like it was this big love story."

Ryan and Fawcett began their romance in the late 70s and welcomed their son Redmond in 1985. They remained partners until 1997, when the actor was caught cheating with the actress Leslie Stefanson.

Following their split, the late TV personality's daughter, Tatum, accused him of abusing Fawcett. "He had a terrible temper and was very violent. He beat her up," she claimed, but her revelation did not stop Ryan from rekindling his relationship with the actress in 2001.

Tatum, Griffin, and Redmond are not only the children who did not turn up for their father's funeral but also the trio who have called out the deceased for negatively impacting their lives.

While Ryan appeared to have a close bond with Patrick, his rocky relationship with his older children began in their childhood. For decades, Tatum and Griffin were estranged from the patriarch, with his daughter linking their problems to the start of his romance with Fawcett.

"My dad doesn't have any idea how horrendous his leaving was for us," Tatum once confessed to PEOPLE. She also accused her father of physical and emotional abuse, claiming he exposed her and Griffin to drugs. Her younger brother supported this narrative when he recalled his tumultuous past in 2015, saying:

"My life has been a reign of drug and alcohol degradation. I had to self-medicate my entire life because there was pain everywhere. There were drugs everywhere in my family all day, every day. It was the '60s and '70s, and Tatum and I had a tough time."

"My whole family has been absolutely destroyed to smithereens from drug addiction and alcoholism," Griffin admitted. "The common denominator is drugs and alcohol and depression, and it's a never-ending cycle. I had to walk away from all of it. I'm done."

Aside from allegedly exposing his older kids to drugs, Ryan was arrested in 2007 for assaulting Griffin with a firearm. While the late actor claimed it was self-defense, his son noted he was attacked for trying to help his younger brother Redmond get sober.

Ryan's youngest son, Redmond, has also struggled with substance abuse from a young age and blamed his addiction on his famous parents. In one interview, he claimed it was "not drugs that have been a problem; it's the psychological trauma of my entire life — my whole life experiences have affected me the most."
