Susan Sarandon Dropped From Film Project
Despite issuing an apology for her anti-Jewish remarks at a pro-Palestine rally, Sarandon's career has been hit with another loss.
According to a report, an indie film production company has decided to no longer work with the movie star on a short film project due to her controversial remarks.
"As a company, PTO Films would like to make it clear that Susan Sarandon's views do not reflect the opinions of our organization," the company's co-founder David Barroso told Page Six. He added, "We were considering her for a short film, but due to her recent statements, we have decided to pursue other options."
Sarandon was set to star as Dr. Sylvia Mansfield in the company's film titled "Slipping Away," a thriller about a man with Schizophrenia who "struggles with his own psychosis and his wife's extramarital affair."
The short film, previously listed among her upcoming projects on her IMDB page with the "pre-production" tag, has been removed.
Talent Agency UTA Cuts Ties With The Actress
News of Sarandon losing a film gig comes after it was confirmed that she had been dropped by her longtime talent agency, UTA, over her comments about Jews.
The "Blue Beetle" star, who has been in partnership With UTA since 2014, said at a pro-Palestine rally in New York City, "There are a lot of people afraid of being Jewish at this time, and are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country."
Shortly after her comments went viral, sources told Page Six that employees at UTA were disheartened by what Sarandon said at the rally, with a spokesperson for the talent agency confirming that they would no longer be representing the 77-year-old actress.
Sarandon's statement also caught the attention of Aviva Klompas, the former director of speechwriting at the Israeli Mission to the United Nations, who alleged, "When Susan Sarandon said that Jews 'are getting a taste of what it feels like to be a Muslim in this country' she was saying that American Jews have it coming — that we don't deserve to live free from harassment and assault."
Susan Sarandon Apologizes For Her Anti-Jewish Comments
Amid a wave of criticisms, Sarandon issued a lengthy apology, noting that she was sorry for what she said at the pro-Palestine rally and that it was a "mistake."
"Recently, I attended a rally alongside a diverse group of activists seeking to highlight the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza and call for a ceasefire. I had not planned to speak but was invited to take the stage and say a few words," Sarandon's apology began.
The actress continued: "Intending to communicate my concern for an increase in hate crimes, I said that Jewish Americans, as the targets of rising antisemitic hate, 'are getting a taste of what it is like to be Muslim in this country,' so often subjected to violence. This phrasing was a terrible mistake, as it implies that until recently Jews have been strangers to persecution, when the opposite is true."
