It’s "Splitsville" for Kacey Musgraves and boyfriend Cole Schafer, who have called things off after two years of being a couple.

The pair first raised speculations about being an item in June 2021 after they were spotted enjoying each other’s company and have since continued professing their love to each other publicly.

A source close to the former couple confirmed the news of their split to US Weekly, stating that they “weren’t seeing eye to eye in terms of where they are in life right now and decided to end things.”

The pair went Instagram official in 2021 when Schafer posted a Polaroid of them and accompanied it with the caption: “I’m trying like hell not to write about her.” In August of the same year, Musgraves reminisced about their first meeting and how Schafer did not know who she was, which made everything better.

“A handful of grown men come out, and they’re sweating trying to keep up with you on the sidewalk. It feels very predatory,” continued the Grammy winner in her New York Times 2021 profile.

Quite the expressive couple, Schafer rolled out a heartfelt post about his love for the singer right after her performance at the Madison Square Garden in New York in February 2022.

He described her as the “most naturally gifted human” he has been around. Schafer also described her energy backstage as “like a butterfly that can’t make up its mind where it wants to land.”

The poet added that Musgraves’s realness continued to impress him, adding: “She’s the same human when she’s talking to my mother, my father, my grandfather, my brothers or my best friend Jack, as she is when she’s talking to an arena filled with 15,000 people.”

Despite Musgraves' very public divorce from her ex-husband Ruston Kelly,  the singer had no plans to keep her relationship with Schafer private and stated in an interview with Time Magazine that she was proud of the love they shared.

“It’s natural to want to share that. And I don’t want to come across like a robot—I think people like me because I share who I am.”

In January 2023, the singer celebrated her boyfriend’s birthday by uploading slides of pictures, including one of him holding a disco light.

“Happiest birthday to the brightest flame in my world. I love you, @cole_schafer. You are such a fixture in the lives of all the people who are lucky enough to really know you,” she wrote in the accompanying caption while adding the myriad of reasons she is “grateful” for having him around.

Musgraves concluded her tribute by highlighting the sexiest thing about Schafer- his “unabashed, full-throttle vulnerability.”

Schafer acknowledged the “Slow Burn” star’s sweet gesture in the comments and wrote, “Likewise Kace. You’re the most beautiful and rewarding love I’ve ever known. I love you, forever and always. See you soon my Tufted Titmouse."

Schafer and Musgraves’s relationship started after they met at a restaurant, according to the writer’s account of the story on his Instagram on her birthday in 2021, where he wrote:

“Here’s to you looking to your right when you stepped into F—. Here’s to you writing me back, Here’s to you making it through thirty-two, and here’s to you making history in thirty-three. It’s been so damn pretty falling for you, Kacey.”

Musgraves then returned the energy on Schafer’s birthday, describing him as her “Southern Indiana angel boy.” During their romance, the "Merry Go 'Round" singer acknowledged his goofiness and efforts at making the world a better place, adding, “Also your cooking turns me on. Celebrating you today and every day.”

Before her relationship with Schafer, the “High Horse” singer was married to fellow country star Kelly. The pair tied the knot in 2018 and announced their split in a statement in 2020, which read:

“We believe that we were put into each other’s lives for a divine reason and have both changed each other infinitely for the better. The love we have for each other goes far beyond the relationship we’ve shared as husband and wife. It’s a soul connection that can never be erased.”

She then allegedly dated Nashville doctor Gerald Onuoha shortly after. However, a month after the rumor of her romance broke out, the singer revealed that she was not looking for a relationship.
