Dean McDermott is finally opening up about his split from his ex-wife, Tori Spelling.
In a new bombshell interview, the actor shared his side of the story of how his marriage fell apart and also spoke candidly about how much of it was affected by his addiction to prescription pills and alcohol.
McDermott announced his separation from Spelling in a since-deleted post on Instagram. The former couple, who share five kids, are yet to file for divorce officially.
Dean McDermott Opens Up About His Separation From Tori Spelling
In the candid interview, the "Chopped Canada" host McDermott spoke about his marriage to Spelling and how she always looked out for him during their marriage of 17 years.
"All Tori's ever done to this day is want me to be happy and healthy, and I inflicted a lot of damage and pain on that woman," McDermott said. "I'm taking accountability for that today. And it's the biggest amend that I'm ever going to have to make."
The actor confessed that it got to a point in their marriage when they began to live like "roommates." McDermott shared with the news outlet that he battled with depression amid his family being constantly bombarded by the paparazzi and while having financial issues.
He spoke of how he would get drunk on tequila and drugs and enter into "alcohol-fueled rages," leaving Spelling and their children "petrified."
Dean McDermott Says Alcohol Made Him 'Feel Good Enough'
During his chat with the Daily Mail, McDermott talked about his journey to becoming clean and noted that his message announcing his split from Spelling was sent while he was under the influence.
McDermott confessed, "alcohol made me feel good enough. I started feeling good enough until it got to a point where it didn't – it ended up in isolation. It ended up with me drinking a fifth of tequila every night, seven days a week, and a handful of narcos [prescription meds] by myself with a beautiful family in the other room."
He told the news outlet that that is "what led to the brokenness and to what happened between [him] and Tori," adding, "I couldn't do it anymore. I couldn't live that life anymore. I was tired of the anger and the yelling."
McDermott also revealed that he has begun speaking with Spelling again and is "desperate" to see his kids. They hadn't talked to each other since he moved the 50-year-old and their children out of their home due to a mold infestation in June.
Dean McDermott Says He Still Loves Tori Spelling
Since their separation, both Spelling and McDermott have moved on with new partners. Spelling is dating advertising CEO Ryan Cramer, while McDermott has been spotted out with a 33-year-old Texan named Lily Calo.
Despite his blossoming romance with Calo, the 56-year-old actor noted that he still has love for his estranged wife.
He said, "It was a total fairytale. I mean, it was a beautiful love story. Love at first sight and getting married in the most beautiful way possible. It was a dream come true. And then we had to come back to Hollywood and deal with all the s--- people gave us."
"After we got married, they were all saying 'give it six months.' Well, so much for six months – we showed you because it's been 18 years and five kids," McDermott added.
He Blames Himself For The Breakdown of His Marriage
During his emotional interview, McDermott, who is now clean, stated that he was taking all the blame for the breakdown of his marriage to Spelling, noting that his addiction to alcohol and drugs made it difficult to live with him.
"It's going to be living the rest of my life making amends because I took something that was really beautiful and I just tore it down year after year, day after day," McDermott admitted.
He told the news outlet about the beginning of their relationship with Spelling and how he had a crush on her long before they were introduced to each other on the set of the 2005 film, "Mind Over Murder."
At the time, the duo was with other people; Spelling was married to actor Charlie Shanian, while McDermott was married to singer Mary Jo Eustace, with whom he shares a 25-year-old son, Jack.
Since their separation in June, neither Spelling nor McDermott has officially filed to end their marriage legally.
