A yet-to-be-identified man who was arrested in connection to the murder of hockey player Adam Johnson has reportedly been released on bail.

Johnson died after the skate blade of his fellow player, Matt Petgrave, slashed his throat during a hockey game. Petgrave was missing in action from his team's recent game but received a standing ovation from the crowd.

According to The Sun, the man who was arrested yesterday in connection to the death of Johnson has been bailed. At the moment, the identity of the detained individual charged on suspicion of manslaughter has yet to be revealed.

In a prior statement on the case, Detective Chief Superintendent Becs Horsfall noted, "Our investigation launched immediately following this tragedy and we have been carrying out extensive enquiries ever since to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances."

"We have been speaking to highly specialised experts in their field to assist in our inquiries and continue to work closely with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council, which is supporting our ongoing investigation," Horsfall added.

Per the news outlet, a coroner who opened an inquest into Johnson's death cautioned that there might be more fatal accidents in ice hockey if neck guards are not mandated for players.

During a match between the Nottingham Panthers and Sheffield Steelers, around 8,000 hockey fans watched in horror as Johnson fell to the ground bleeding after the skate blade of fellow player Pettgrave cut into his throat amid a collision. 

Johnson eventually succumbed to the injury at the hospital he was rushed to. According to Daily Mail, Sheffield's senior coroner, Tanyka Rawden, shared that initial investigations had found that Johnson "was seriously injured."

She added: "He was taken by ambulance to the Northern General Hospital in Sheffield where he died later that day as a result of the injuries sustained. He was identified by his fiancee, Ryan Wolfe."

Following his passing, there were several calls on social media for Pettgrave to be charged with manslaughter due to clips of his collision with Johnson going viral.

Matt Petgrave Receives Standing Ovation From Hockey Fans

Petgrave was notably absent from his team's first home game since the tragic death of Johnson. 

At the game, his team, the Sheffield Steelers, paid tribute to the late Nottingham Panthers forward with a wreath laid at center ice and a two-minute silence followed by a round of applause that lasted a minute, per the BBC.

There was also a standing ovation from over 8,000 hockey fans for Pettgrave after an image of the hockey defenseman was displayed on the video board at the game.

Johnson's fiancée, Wolfe's speech on his death at his memorial was one of heartbreak. Family and friends of the late hockey player gathered to pay their respects at Hibbing Memorial Arena in Minnesota, where he is from.

With Johnson's sister by her side, Wolfe said she wanted to write her late fiancé a letter similar to what she would have written for their wedding.

"Hi babe, I want you to know how much I love you and adore you. You've been so amazingly supportive and kind to me since the day we met, and I couldn't have been more grateful for it," Wolfe started.

She continued: "I always thought that maybe if I was lucky enough, after a lifetime together I might start to be more like you. You are such a special person. You have the best sense of humor, the biggest heart, the quickest wit and the kindest soul. You're unbelievably loyal, dedicated and smart."

Concluding her heartbreaking tribute, Wolfe said: "I'm never going to stop thinking about you, missing you and loving you until we can be together again. I love you."

Johnson's former hockey team, the Pittsburgh Penguins, also paid tribute to him with a heartfelt statement, noting that the world of hocking is in a state of mourning.
