Matthew Perry's ex-girlfriend is speaking out on the actor's shocking death. Kayti Edwards, who dated Perry in 2006, claims that the actor might have relapsed before his death.
Edwards questioned reports surrounding Perry's passing, saying that the actor's social media posts and his use of his alter ego "Mattman" were a sign he was "not sober."
Perry openly discussed his struggles with substance abuse and addiction in his memoir, released last year. Since his passing, a foundation has been launched in his honor to help people with an addiction.
Matthew Perry's Ex-Girlfriend Fears He Relapsed
In a recent interview, Edwards, who is the granddaughter of actress Julie Andrews, revealed she did not believe Perry drowned, noting that the "Friends" star likely relapsed, hence his death.
"I don't believe he just drowned in his Jacuzzi, that doesn't sound right," Edwards told The Sun. "I know Matthew and I know that he wouldn't have just drowned. I think he might have taken pills in the week leading up to this."
She continued, "They said there were no prescription painkillers at the scene, which doesn't surprise me, because he didn't leave drugs lying around. He was paranoid and would take them all, so there wasn't any evidence, and then go out for more when he was ready to."
Perry had been very open about his substance abuse past but was seemingly on the mend prior to his passing. People who encountered the star also noted that he was sober and very optimistic about life.
Kayti Edwards Says His 'Mattman' Posts Were A Sign He Was 'Not Sober'
Speaking more on Perry's passing, Edwards told the news outlet that the "Fools Rush In" star's final posts on social media were a sign that he had relapsed and was high before he died.
Perry had made multiple cryptic posts on Instagram and X, formerly known as Twitter, on the days leading up to his death. The posts included Batman references and the use of the name of his alter ego, "Mattman."
In his final post on Instagram, he made reference to the alter ego in a message attached to a now-chilling photo of him in a hot tub against the backdrop of a blue night sky.
His ex-girlfriend believes these actions were red flags and claimed that the actor only talked about "Mattman" when he was no longer "sober."
"That Mattman thing was not something he did when he was sober. Mattman would come out when he was not sober and he felt kind of invincible," Edwards stated.
"I was around when he was getting high, although I was not getting high with him, and when I would say maybe he should cool it a little bit with the drugs, he would say, 'No, I'm Mattman,'" the mother of four added.
Kayti Edwards Claims Matthew Perry Loved Being In The Water When High
Edwards noted in her chat with The Sun that Perry had a tendency to get into the water whenever he was high. She also alleged that the actor was once caught high and naked in his neighbor's swimming pool.
"One time, his neighbor in Hollywood Hills found Matthew naked and high in his swimming pool. I had to go over there and get him out of his neighbor's pool. He had a thing with water when he was doing drugs," Edwards claimed.
She added, "He always wanted to be in the pool or the Jacuzzi."
Edwards, who reportedly last spoke to Perry last year after the release of his memoir, "Friends, Lovers, And The Big Terrible Thing," said the star "was always alone" when he got high.
As we previously reported, Perry was found dead in his home after playing a two-hour game of pickleball. He had sent his assistant out on an errand, and on getting back, they found him unresponsive in his hot tub.
How Matthew Perry And Kayti Edwards Met
Edwards went on to talk about how she and Perry first met at her grandfather, the director of the original "Pink Panther" film, Blake Edwards' house. Six months after that encounter, they ran into each other again at an AA meeting, after which they began dating in 2006.
She said his drug use at the time terrified her, and she would always "go home and pray, 'Please don't let him die.'"
Edwards stated that what hurts her the most is that she never got the chance to say goodbye to her friend. She said, "That's what kills me the most, that I didn't get to say goodbye."
Perry has since been laid to rest at the Forest Lawn cemetery in Hollywood Hills. His funeral was attended by his family members and "Friends" co-stars, Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer and Courteney Cox.
