Perry’s memoir, 'Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing' details his journey from the start to the years leading up to right before he released the book. Throughout those years, the 'Friends' star struggled with mental health, drug addiction, and alcohol addiction, which he has stated was a painful time in his life.

When he published the book, it seemed as though that was something he was still battling as one quote really stood out, especially after his passing.

“My mind is out to kill me, and I know it,” Perry said in his memoir. “I am constantly filled with a lurking loneliness, a yearning, clinging to the notion that something outside of me will fix me. But I had had all that the outside had to offer.”

Although the cause of death is still under investigation, it is believed that Perry drowned as he was found unresponsive in his hot tub. An autopsy and toxicology report are expected to answer more questions about his true cause of death, but police did do an initial investigation of Perry's house, and all they found were prescription anti-depressants and anti-anxiety medications -- no illegal narcotics were discovered at the scene.

After Perry was found unresponsive at his home last weekend, many began speculating that the “Friends” actor relapsed or had some sort of illegal drug in his system. A close friend of Perry’s is saying otherwise.

“He was 100 percent sober when he passed,” Matthew Perry’s close friend, Athenna Crosby, said per our previous report.

“I mean, I can’t know what exactly he was thinking or feeling. I can only share my experience,” Crosby added. “And, of course, he was his own person that maybe he had said, done, or thought of things the day that he passed that I might never come to know.”

The 'Friends' star got raw in his memoir, as he also admitted that costar, Jennifer Aniston, called him out for drinking while filming. She approached Perry “in a kind of weird but loving way,” confronting him about the booze.

“I know you’re drinking,” she told Perry, per, his memoir. “‘We can smell it,’” she added. But what devastated him was “the plural, as she said, “we” — that “hit me like a sledgehammer,” he said.

“‘I know I’m drinking too much,’ I said, ‘but I don’t exactly know what to do about it,’” he recalled telling his co-star at the time.

Last year, when getting ready for the ‘Friends’ reunion, Perry stated he had been clean for 18 months at the time, even, spending “$9 million or something trying to get sober.”
