Andy Cohen Talks ‘Really Creepy’ Britney Spears Interview Amid Conservatorship

Pop star Britney Spears was interviewed by Andy Cohen during her conservatorship, which lasted from February 2008 to November 2021.

The now 41-year-old pop star's tell-all memoir, "The Woman In Me," was released on Tuesday, October 24, and has reportedly already sold over 400,000 copies to become one of the best-selling celebrity memoirs in history. Taking a look at Britney's past, Andy Cohen recalled an unsettling interaction he had with the Princess of Pop while he was interviewing her for her Glory album.

While interviewing the "Toxic" singer for her Glory album, Andy Cohen discussed a "really creepy" interaction he had with the pop star and a mysterious woman on a recent episode of SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live. "I get there, and this woman was there, and it was like Britney was her captive. She was her captor," he said, as per ET. "I'm not gonna mention her name because I don't want to get sued, but it was really creepy."

Andy said that he had been warned that there would be a woman who would accompany the "Overprotected" singer at all times before he flew to Los Angeles for the interview. "There's this woman who is at Britney's side at all times, and she basically tells her what to do and where to go, and it's really creepy," he recalled.

In addition to Britney, he says musician will.i.am was also present for the interview. During the interview, Andy claims that he, Britney, and will.i.am were on stage when the woman joined them to give Britney "instructions." He said that Britney "murmured agreement" to the orders given by her alleged "captor," according to the talk show host. He also recalled an odd interaction involving a birthday cake.

"I remember they brought me in to meet Britney before the interview, and I was in some room, and they brought Britney a birthday cake and they're like 'Happy Birthday, Britney, Surprise!' and Britney goes, 'It's not my birthday. My birthday was last month,'" Cohen said. "And I'm like, 'What are they doing?' It was clearly for the cameras, and it was just all so weird."

Following a public mental health breakdown in 2007, the "Girl In The Mirror" singer was subjected to a thirteen-year conservatorship from February 2008 to November 2021. During most of that time, her financial and personal affairs were controlled by her father, Jamie Spears.

In an excerpt of "The Woman In Me" released by People magazine exactly one week before her memoir was released, the "Gimme More" singer explained that she "became a robot" during her conservatorship, “I became a robot. But not just a robot — a sort of child-robot. I had been so infantilized that I was losing pieces of what made me feel like myself."

“The conservatorship stripped me of my womanhood, made me into a child. I became more of an entity than a person onstage. I had always felt music in my bones and my blood; they stole that from me," she continued, explaining that she felt like a "shadow" of herself at that time.

“This is what’s hard to explain, how quickly I could vacillate between being a little girl and being a teenager and being a woman, because of the way they had robbed me of my freedom," she wrote. "There was no way to behave like an adult, since they wouldn’t treat me like an adult, so I would regress and act like a little girl; but then my adult self would step back in — only my world didn’t allow me to be an adult,” Spears writes.

In the book, she adds: “The woman in me was pushed down for a long time. They wanted me to be wild onstage, the way they told me to be, and to be a robot the rest of the time. I felt like I was being deprived of those good secrets of life — those fundamental supposed sins of indulgence and adventure that make us human," she added. "They wanted to take away that specialness and keep everything as rote as possible. It was death to my creativity as an artist.”
