Fans may think that, being a celebrity, pop star Britney Spears gets to wine and dine on all the finest foods in the world.

That may be true now, but when she was subject to a conservatorship from February 2008 to November 2021, the now 41-year-old pop star revealed that her food choices were limited. In her memoir, "The Woman In Me," she claims that her father, Jamie Spears, forced her to eat only chicken and vegetables.

In her memoir, “The Woman In Me,” the “Toxic” singer said that her father put her on a “strict diet” in order to maintain her weight. “The irony was that we had a butler—an extravagance—and I would beg him for real food,” Britney wrote, recalling times when she would literally beg for a hamburger or ice cream.

However, due to “strict orders” from her father, she was not allowed to indulge. “So for two years, I ate almost nothing but chicken and canned vegetables,” she wrote. “Two years is a long time to not be able to eat what you want, especially when it’s your body and your work and your soul making the money that everyone’s living off of.”

She added, “Two years of asking for French fries and being told no. I found it so degrading.” After being denied the food that she wanted for so long, Britney began to say that she felt like “[her] body wasn’t [hers] anymore.”

She admitted that she “felt scared,” adding, “I’ll be honest, I was f---ing miserable.” The Princess of Pop also pointed out that the “strict diet” had the “opposite effect” of what her father intended, as she found herself quickly gaining weight, as per Page Six.

“Even though I wasn’t eating as much, he made me feel so ugly and like I wasn’t good enough,” she wrote. “Maybe that’s because of the power of your thoughts: whatever you think you are, you become.”

In her tell-all book, Britney recalled how she was “so beaten down” that she “just surrendered” to whatever her father wanted during the conservatorship. “My body was strong enough to carry two children and agile enough to execute every choreographed move perfectly onstage,” she wrote. “And now here I was, having every calorie recorded so people could continue to get rich off my body.”

However, she expressed frustration that “no one else” but her found it “outrageous” that she was on such a strict diet. “My family would stay in Destin, a pretty beach town in Florida, at a ridiculously beautiful condo that I bought for them and eat good-tasting food every night while I was starving and working,” she wrote.

In her memoir, she recalled how her father “repeatedly told me I looked fat and that I was going to have to do something about it.” The constant scrutiny around her appearance is why she decided to publicly shave her head in 2007, one year before the conservatorship began.

“I’d been eyeballed so much growing up, I’d been looked up and down and had people telling me what they thought of my body since I was a teenager. Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back,” she wrote.

Unfortunately, under the conservatorship, she lost all control over how she wanted to look. “But under the conservatorship, I was made to understand that those days were now over,” she wrote. “I had to grow my hair out and get back into shape. I had to go to bed early and take whatever medication they told me to take.”

In another excerpt from her memoir released by People magazine, the “Overprotected” singer said she felt like a “shadow” of herself after thinking about how her father and his associates controlled her, her public image, and her career for over a decade.

“Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself. I think back now on my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for that long and it makes me feel sick,” she wrote.

“Think of how many male artists gambled all their money away; how many had substance abuse or mental health issues. No one tried to take away their control over their bodies and money,” she continued, adding, “I didn’t deserve what my family did to me.”
