Cher is opening up about how she felt when she learned of her son, Chaz Bono's decision to transition.
While discussing her journey as a parent in a recent interview, the singer admitted that Chaz's transition was "difficult" for her.
Cher Admits Son Chaz Bono's Transition Was 'Difficult'
In a recent interview, Cher opened up about her feelings when her son Chaz transitioned. The "Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again" star admitted that raising Chaz was challenging, especially during his transition.
"When Chaz went through the transition, that was difficult for me," she told the Los Angeles Times. "It shouldn’t have been because, you know, I’ve had gay friends forever. I just met some beautiful trans chicks and we have an affinity. Now I’m totally fine."
The 77-year-old singer explained further, "It’s hard to lose one child to get a new one, especially so late. I think that was the hard thing for me. I don’t think it was the transition. It was waiting to see who the person would be, and would they be so much different than the person that was before them."
Cher has previously stated that she didn't handle her son's transitioning "all that well in the beginning," noting, per NME, that "It took me a minute. Because you’ve been with a child for 40 years, and then all of a sudden … but you know what? Chaz was so happy!"
How Cher's Sons Feel About Her Relationship With Alexander Edwards
Insiders shared with Radar Online that Cher's relationship with her 37-year-old boyfriend, Alexander 'A.E.' Edwards, affected both of her sons, Elijah Blue Allman and Chaz. They explained that both men worried that Edwards was emotionally manipulating the TV legend and trying to get his hands on her $380 million fortune.
Elijah and Chaz were probably ecstatic when Cher and Edwards ended their romance in April this year. However, the "Believe" hitmaker and her boy toy have recently been spotted wearing matching outfits and holding hands in Los Angeles and Paris.
Sources told the news outlet that Cher's friends are also upset about her reconciling with Edwards. They said, "Cher's friends were shocked by the singer's being out with A.E." They reportedly don't like the singer and "have real concerns about where his heart is at in all of this."
Did Her Relationship With Alexander Edwards Cause Elijah's Breakdown?
Cher's relationship with Edwards allegedly caused the latest drug-induced breakdown of Elijah. Insiders told Radar Online that the romance pulled Cher away from Elijah and his older brother, Chaz, which Elijah didn't handle well.
The source said, "Once Cher started dating AE, she had far less time for anyone else in her life. Elijah suffered perhaps the most as he's extremely codependent on his mom and found it very hard when she stopped taking calls and went from talking every day without fail to once or twice a week at best."
According to the insider, Edwards encouraged Cher to force Elijah to "stand on his own two feet and stop mooching off her." This eventually led to Elijah depending more on drugs, which he's already battled for decades, and ending his nine-year marriage to singer Marieangela King.
However, regarding how much responsibility Cher and Edwards' relationship has for Elijah's drug abuse spiral, the source said, "It would be wrong to blame AE for Elijah's addictions and weak personality — but his presence in Cher's life definitely threw her son off the deep end."
Cher Recently Intervened In Elijah's Drug Use
Over the past six months, there were multiple reports of Elijah wandering around the famous Chateau Marmont hotel, looking very drugged up. Several photos from social media showed the singer sitting around the hotel property with a cigarette in hand.
Hotel staff reportedly once found him prone and unconscious at the hotel entrance and had to call Cher.
Shortly after that incident, police arrived to escort Elijah off the property and to an undisclosed rehab center, likely at the instruction of Cher. It's not the first time Cher has had to intervene in Elijah's life because of a drug crisis. According to his estranged wife, King, the "Burlesque" actress once had Elijah kidnapped and taken to rehab.
King revealed the incident in court documents for the settlement of her divorce from Elijah. She claimed that Cher hired four men to break into a New York hotel room when she and Elijah were trying to fix their relationship.
Cher has since denied the kidnapping allegations to People Magazine, saying, "That rumor is not true."
