Britney Spears Explains What ‘Freedom’ Means On Social Media, In Life

In her memoir, “The Woman In Me,” Britney opens up on what freedom means to her. “Freedom means being goofy, silly, and having fun on social media. … Freedom means being able to make mistakes, and learning from them,” she wrote, as per Page Six. “Freedom means I don’t have to perform for anyone — onstage or offstage.”

“Freedom means that I get to be as beautifully imperfect as everyone else,” she continued, adding, “And freedom means the ability, and the right, to search for joy, in my own way, on my own terms.”

Although some haven’t been a fan of the videos that she posted on social media, to the pop star, that is what she has gained through her freedom and it looks like she has no plans of stopping now.

In an excerpt of “The Woman In Me” released by CBS News, Britney claims that she went through the conservatorship for “one very good reason,” adding, “I did it for my kids.” In her memoir, she wrote, “Because I played by the rules, I was reunited with my boys.”

Britney had two boys, Sean Preston, 18, and Jayden James, 17, with her ex-husband, Kevin Federline. During the conservatorship, her father, Jamie Spears, was appointed as her conservator and controlled everything from her finances to her physical appearance.

“Even though I begged the court to appoint literally anyone else — and I mean, anyone off the street would have been better — my father was given the job,” she wrote.

In an excerpt from her memoir, “The Woman In Me,” released by People magazine before its official release, the "Overprotected" singer lamented how she was “too sick to choose my own boyfriend and yet somehow healthy enough to appear on sitcoms and morning shows, and to perform for thousands of people in a different part of the world every week.”

“From that point on, I began to think that he saw me as put on the earth for no other reason than to help their cash flow,” Britney wrote, claiming that he told her, “I’m Britney Spears now” at the start of her 13-year conservatorship. After years of partying with famous friends like Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton, Britney said that she “went from partying a lot to being a total monk.”

“Security guards handed me prepackaged envelopes of meds and watched me take them. They put parental controls on my iPhone. Everything was scrutinized and controlled. Everything,” Britney wrote in her memoir. “If I thought getting criticized about my body in the press was bad, it hurt even more from my own father. He repeatedly told me I looked fat and that I was going to have to do something about it.”

In another excerpt from her memoir released by People magazine, the “Toxic” singer said she felt like a “shadow” of herself after thinking about how her father and his associates controlled her, her public image, and her career for over a decade.

“Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself. I think back now on my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for that long and it makes me feel sick,” she wrote.

“Think of how many male artists gambled all their money away; how many had substance abuse or mental health issues. No one tried to take away their control over their bodies and money,” she continued, adding, “I didn’t deserve what my family did to me.”

Britney Spears' memoir "The Woman In Me" was officially released on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
