Pop star Britney Spearssays that she "absolutely hated" her judging role on "X Factor USA" in her memoir, "The Woman In Me," which was officially released on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.

The Princess of Pop appeared on the show in 2012 along with Demi Lovato to replace judges Nicole Scherzinger, who would later become a judge on “The Masked Singer,” and Paula Abdul. Britney and the “Skyscraper” singer starred on the judging panel along with veteran host Simon Cowell and L.A. Reid but felt that she was not fit for the position.

In an excerpt of “The Woman In Me” obtained by the Daily Mail and published a day before the book’s official release, Britney said that she had a hard time acting “skeptical for eight straight hours,” which made filming “X Factor USA” so exhausting.

“Feeling like I needed more direction, I decided to go back to work. I tried to occupy myself by being productive. I began appearing on more TV shows – including, in 2012, as a judge on The X Factor,” Britney wrote in her memoir. “I think a lot of people are really professional on TV, like Christina Aguilera and Gwen Stefani. When the camera is on them, they thrive. And that’s great.”

“I used to be able to do that when I was younger, but again, I feel like I age backward when I‘m afraid,” she explained. “And so I got to where I was very, very nervous if I knew I had to be on air, and I didn’t like being nervous all day long. Maybe I’m just not cut out for that anymore. I’ve accepted that now and it’s okay.”

“I can tell people who try to push me in that direction no. I’ve been forced into things I didn’t want to do and been humiliated. It’s not my thing at this point,” she went on. “Now, if you’ve got me a cute cameo on a fun TV show where I’m in and out in a day that’s one thing, but to act skeptical for eight straight hours while judging on TV? Uh, no thank you. I absolutely hated it.”

The former “American Idol” judge previously begged the pop star to come back to work with him again in November 2022. He praised the “lovely” star for having “lovely ideas about how to launch someone’s career.”

At the time, he told E! News: “We spent so long on the phone talking about X Factor before we did it. There's a side of Britney a lot of people don't know. I mean, I was on the phone with her for two or three hours every time. She was super smart, lovely ideas about how to launch someone else's career, which is critical if you're going to be a judge on one of these shows. So I had a fantastic relationship with her.”

Although Britney was forced to perform on “X Factor USA” due to her conservatorship, now that she is free to make her own rules, it seems unlikely that she has any plans to host an entire season. It is possible that she might return as a guest job, but even then, as Britney wrote, “It’s not my thing at this point.”

At the time, while still speaking about “X Factor USA,” Simon Cowell told The Sun: “X Factor at the beginning, when there was no expectation of us and we could just do what we liked, was great fun. It was when it became successful that everyone, including me, went a bit nuts.”

“It was a time in my life where everything was great on the surface but underneath that, it just wasn’t fun, and not great. Everything was skewed wrong. And I never want to feel that way again,” he added. “Now I think you have to be satisfied with the quality of something, rather than what you’re being judged on - ratings or chart positions.”

Britney Spears' memoir "The Woman In Me" was officially released on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
