Guinness World Records Join Millions In Reflecting On Bobi's 31 Years On Earth

GWR has expressed its sorrow at the passing of Bobi, sharing in a statement issued via their website recently. According to the site, Bobi was officially recognized as the world's oldest living dog and the oldest dog ever on February 2, 2023.

His birth date was confirmed by the Servicio Médico-Veterinário do Município de Leiria — Veterinary Medical Service of the Municipality of Leiria — in 1992.

His age was additionally authenticated by SIAC, a pet database authorized by the Portuguese government and overseen by the Sindicato Nacional dos Médicos Veterinários; National Union of Veterinarians [SNMV].

While the verification further solidified his status as the world's oldest dog, his journey to even reach his first birthday was marked by fortune. Bobi was part of a litter of four puppies, but due to the family's existing animal commitments, Leonel's father chose not to keep them.

In a twist of fate, Leonel's parents initially intended to take the puppies while their mother was away, but they accidentally left Bobi behind. He remained concealed amidst a pile of wood stored in the outbuilding where he was born, eluding detection by Leonel's parents.

Bobi's discovery came about when Leonel and his brothers stumbled upon the hidden puppy. They decided to keep Bobi's existence a secret until their parents became aware of the dog. And by then, it was too late to consider any other option.

Consequently, the purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo — a Portuguese breed known for guarding livestock — became an integral part of the family. In his later years, Bobi faced challenges with walking and a decline in his eyesight.

Due to his problems, he spent most of his time in the backyard alongside his feline companions. Leonel characterized Bobi as a "very sociable" dog, showcasing his friendly and amiable nature.
