Pop star Britney Spears is sharing a lot of information about her conservatorship and her life with her family in her memoir, "The Woman In Me."
Although she has opened up about how she felt about her family on social media in the past, this is the first time that fans are really getting a comprehensive look at what the pop star was subjected to, not only during her 13-year conservatorship but throughout her life.
Britney Spears Explains Why She Never Wants To See Her Family Again
In her memoir, “The Woman In Me,” a source told Us Weekly that Britney, 41, explains why she doesn’t want to see her family ever again. She said that she found “peace” when she realized she “never wanted to see” her father Jamie Spears, 71, her mother Lynne Spears, 68, her brother Bryan Spears, 46, or her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, 32.
According to the book, the realization occurred when Briteny went home to visit her parents during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown because, as she says, they stopped answering her phone calls. During the visit, Britney noted that her beloved Madame Alexander doll collection, which she received as a child, had been “thrown away.”
Britney had stored several belongings at Lynne’s house when she was admitted into a mental health facility; however, it looks like Lynne discarded some of her belongings, including several year’s “worth of [her] writing” and “binders” of poetry that she had written throughout her life. The "Toxic" singer realized that her family had “thrown me away” through her belongings and decided that it was “time to find God” and cut ties with her family once and for all.
Britney Wanted OUT Of Her Conservatorship In 2018
In February 2008, Britney was subjected to a court-ordered conservatorship followed by her 2017 mental health breakdown; however, by 2018, she decided that she had enough. In June 2021, she gave her own court testimony asking for a Los Angeles judge to give her back control over her life.
“I just want my life back. It’s been 13 years, and it’s enough. It’s been a long time since I’ve owned my money,” she said at the time “And it’s my wish and my dream for all of this to end without being tested.”
“I would honestly like to sue my family, to be totally honest with you,” she continued. “I also would like to be able to share my story with the world, and what they did to me, instead of it being a hush-hush secret to benefit all of them.”
Britney Says She Was Used As Her Father’s ‘Cash Flow’ During The Conservatorship
In an excerpt from her memoir released by People magazine on Thursday, the “Gimme More” singer expressed her frustration with being a “cash flow” for her father and her famous family.
She explained how she didn’t understand how she was deemed “too sick to choose my own boyfriend and yet somehow healthy enough to appear on sitcoms and morning shows, and to perform for thousands of people in a different part of the world every week.”
“From that point on, I began to think that he saw me as put on the earth for no other reason than to help their cash flow,” the pop star wrote, claiming that he told her, “I’m Britney Spears now” at the start of her 13-year conservatorship.
Britney Spears Felt Like A 'Shadow' Of Herself During Conservatorship
In another excerpt from her memoir released by People magazine, Britney said that she felt like a “shadow” of herself after how she was controlled. “Security guards handed me prepackaged envelopes of meds and watched me take them. They put parental controls on my iPhone. Everything was scrutinized and controlled. Everything,” she wrote.
“Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself. I think back now on my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for that long and it makes me feel sick,” she wrote.
“Think of how many male artists gambled all their money away; how many had substance abuse or mental health issues. No one tried to take away their control over their bodies and money,” she continued, adding, “I didn’t deserve what my family did to me.”
Britney Spears' memoir "The Woman In Me" is scheduled for release on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
