Singer Britney Spears has a lot to say about her mother, Lynne Spears, in her new memoir, "The Woman In Me," which will officially be released on October 24, 2023.
Britney is not the only person in her family to write a memoir. Although many fans are familiar with her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, and her 2022 memoir, "Things I Should Have Said," Britney's mother Lynne wrote a memoir called "Through The Storm" in 2008, which focuses on Britney's public 2007 breakdown and divulges other private aspects of her life.
Britney Spears SLAMS Lynne Spears For Her 2008 Memoir ‘Through The Storm’
In 2007, Britney Spears made headlines for publicly shaving her head and then attacking a photographer’s car with an umbrella less than a week later. These events contributed to the start of her court-ordered conservatorship, which officially started in February 2008 and was not struck down by a judge until November 2021.
According to Us Weekly, Britney writes in her upcoming memoir that she was not happy with Lynne’s 2008 memoir “Through The Storm,” as she feels it “trades” on her name by going into details about her personal life. Britney said that she went into “full meltdown” mode when her mother published the book and called the timing “unf–kingbelievable.”
In September 2008, a few months after Britney’s conservatorship started, Lynne appeared on the Today Show to discuss the struggles her family was facing with host Meredith Vieira. “I have sat for hours thinking and thinking about everything that’s happened,” Lynne said, as per the outlet. “It’s been a whirlwind. It’s been a wild ride for everybody.”
In “The Woman In Me,” Britney reportedly expresses frustration with the way her mother discussed “the darkest times” of her life while “making money” off her pain in “Through The Storm.” Lynne’s retelling of events also made Britney question whether she was really as “bad” as her mother described her.
Britney Calls Out Her Mother In A 2022 Video
In August 2022, the pop star took to YouTube to post a video where she alleged that Lynne was the person who actually suggested the idea of a conservatorship, even though it was her father, Jamie Spears, who acted as her conservator and controlled her personal and financial affairs.
“A woman introduced the idea [of the conservatorship] to my dad, and my mom actually helped him follow through and made it all happen,” Britney alleged, as per the outlet. “It was all basically set up. There were no drugs in my system. No alcohol. No nothing. It was pure abuse.”
“The whole thing that made it really confusing for me is [the #FreeBritney movement] are on the street fighting for me, but my sister and my mother aren’t doing anything,” Britney continued. “To me, it was like they secretly honestly liked me being the bad one — like I was messed up, and they kind of just liked it that way. Otherwise, why weren’t they outside my doorstep, saying, ‘Baby girl, get in the car. Let’s go.’ I think that’s the main thing that hurt me. I couldn’t process how my family went along with it for so long. Their only response was, ‘We didn’t know.’”
Britney Spears Says She Feels ‘Sick’ Reflecting On The Conservatorship
In an excerpt from “The Woman In Me” published by People magazine on Thursday, Britney reflected on what it was like living in a world where her father and his associates had full control over her personal affairs, her career, and what she looked like.
“Thirteen years went by with me feeling like a shadow of myself. I think back now on my father and his associates having control over my body and my money for that long and it makes me feel sick,” she wrote.
“Think of how many male artists gambled all their money away; how many had substance abuse or mental health issues. No one tried to take away their control over their bodies and money. I didn’t deserve what my family did to me,” she added.
She also noted that her father called her “fat” and made other critical comments about her appearance. “If I thought getting criticized about my body in the press was bad, it hurt even more from my own father,” she wrote. “He repeatedly told me I looked fat and that I was going to have to do something about it.”
In another excerpt, she explained that she shaved her head in 2007 due to the constant scrutiny over her appearance. “I’d been eyeballed so much growing up, I’d been looked up and down, had people telling me what they thought of my body since I was a teenager. Shaving my head and acting out were my ways of pushing back,” she wrote.
Unfortunately, she lost all control over her appearance during the conservatorship. “But under the conservatorship, I was made to understand that those days were now over. I had to grow my hair out and get back into shape. I had to go to bed early and take whatever medication they told me to take.”
Britney Spears' memoir "The Woman In Me" is scheduled for release on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.
