A surprising trade from the Milwaukee Bucks to the Boston Celtics has the Holiday family making big changes in their lives. NBA star Jrue Holiday's wife Lauren is trying to shed some light on the human side of the business that has her family uprooting to a new state with no notice.
Lauren Holiday Shares The Human Side Of NBA Trades
Being traded from the Bucks to the Trail Blazers and then immediately to the Boston Celtics has shaken up Jrue and Lauren's lives a bit. While many people don't see the human side to sports teams' trades, Lauren shared her experience in powerful Instagram post.
Captioned, "Thank you Milwaukee for making our lives infinitely better on this beautiful journey. Next stop, Boston, can’t wait to see the world we create together ❤️," Lauren explains in a carousel of informative photos why "it's never just business."
"It's not personal, it's business. That's rarely true in real life. We just don't want to see what makes it personal," she wrote. "I've debated about writing anything. But, being vulnerable helps me heal. This isn't new. We've been traded before. Each time we've felt something different but this time it crushed me."
She continued to explain that she's not sharing her feelings in the hopes of gaining sympathy or to "bash anyone." She wants people to see there's a human side "behind the business transactions."
"Because contrary to the cliche, it's personal, meaning there are people's lives that are affected," she continued. "It's never 'just business.'"
She explained that their daughter just started first grade a month ago and their son started preschool. The kids go to school with other Bucks children.
"The other woman on the Bucks have been my workout partners, my confidants, and my support system. We have had Bible studies, retreats and shared so many laughs and tears," she wrote. "Not to mention the relationships we have built through our church, our community, and our JLH grantees. All of this is personal to us. It's our life. There's no business to any of that. Milwaukee was home."
Jrue Holiday Wasn't Given A "Heads Up" About His Trade
The next slide in the carousel of photos explained how Jrue found out about his trade. Lauren said there was no warning or conversation about a possible trade.
"Just, it's done. Now move on because 'it's not personal, it's business,'" Lauren emotionally shared. "I'm not sharing this to say we are entitled to anything. I'm sharing this to say we are human beings whose kids develop friendships with other kids in our community, we are people who value family and friendships and invest in the cities we play in. We don't just take from the city we play in, we give to the city we play in and we give our all."
Lauren said that as she wrote her statement, she was grieving loss, but also celebrating "the hope and joy of what's ahead."
She then explained why it's important to "see each other as valuable pieces of a human community."
Many of Lauren's followers left supportive comments for the family who's done so much for Milwaukee.
Giannis Antetokounmpo's fiancé Mariah Riddlesprigger left a comment for her friend.
"Love your vulnerability & love you more!! Thank you for sharing this Lauren, 💛" she wrote.
Phoenix Mercury player Sophie Cunningham wrote, "amen to this. ❤️"
Discover Milwaukee shared, "Your family has been a key part of not only the Bucks, but our overall community. Thank you for everything you’ve done and accomplished to help leave Milwaukee a better place than when you found it. Forever part of our community. ❤️"
The theme of the comment section was gratitude and understanding. One person wrote, "People forget athletes are humans; parents playing the game you love; and if they're like you and Jrue, investing and raising up the community in which you live. You'll be missed both on and off the court. Go Celtics!"
Another added, "You guys have been a LIGHT to the city of Milwaukee. You have made it a better place and we sure as heck will miss you guys! ❤️ Boston is so lucky to have you."
