Billie Eilish Reveals Raw, Creative Process Behind Hit 'Barbie' Song

Singer Billie Eilish has given fans an intimate glimpse into the making of her chart-topping hit, "What Was I Made For?" likening its making to a "tiny creature" that was inside of her for a long time. 

The song, a prominent feature in the Greta Gerwig-directed "Barbie" movie, has been used by women all over to pass the message of how difficult it is to be a woman.

During a recent interview with Allure, the "Happier Than Ever" crooner shared the deeply personal journey that led to the creation of the powerful anthem. 

Eilish revealed that the inspiration for the song struck during a moment of vulnerability when she and her brother-collaborator, Finneas O'Connell, started to doubt their songwriting abilities.

The song featured in this summer's blockbuster movie, "Barbie," has earned hundreds of millions of streams across all platforms and became a fan favorite, especially among women. It became notable as a background sound for TikTok videos, noting how hard it is to be a woman.

"It was as if this song was a tiny creature inside of me for years, scratching the inside of me," she explained. "As soon as we got that prompt, the creature was like, 'Okay, I'm out,' and we [Eilish and her brother-collaborator, Finneas O'Connell] wrote that song in an hour or two."

Eilish found herself in awe as women worldwide showered the song with an outpouring of love and acceptance. During her chat with Allure, she shared her thoughts on the unexpected response to her.

The song, which explores themes of self-discovery and empowerment, appears to have tapped into a collective sentiment among women. Eilish revealed that she and her brother created the masterpiece "without thinking about ourselves and our own lives, but thinking about this character we were inspired by."

"The way the song has been heard and seen by women is so special to me," she said. "All the videos are devastating. I go on TikTok, and it's video after video of how hard it is to be a woman, with that song playing."

The Grammy-winning musical trailblazer sent waves of excitement through her global fanbase as she dropped a tantalizing hint about her next project. In a recent appearance on US radio network Westwood One's segment "The Cookout," Eilish teased that a "whole album of music" is in the works, leaving fans anticipating what promises to be a new and captivating musical journey.

Although she noted that the songs were "in the final stages of making it," it doesn't mean it is "about to come out."

"It is getting there, and it's fascinating," she added, dispelling reports of a new documentary about her in the works. However, she said that she could imagine being part of another one in the future.

Eilish also considered why she recently wore a GoPro on stage, explaining that she often goes down the barrier to be with fans after shows.

"After the shows, I run out into the crowd and jump up on the barricade and, like, grab everybody – really they grab me, and I just submit to it," she explained. "I just put myself there; whatever happens, happens. Whoever grabs what, I submit myself."

The artists, representing different genres and generations of music, joined forces to amplify their voices on a pressing issue that affects countless lives. The video opens with images of Peter Gabriel decrying the ease at which guns can be easily gotten on US soil.

Eilish, known for her thought-provoking lyrics and activism, delivered a passionate message in the video. "I am Billie Eilish, and I'm an artist for action," she said, calling on people to visit the coalition's website and end the "gun violence epidemic."
