'Harry Potter' Actor Sir Michael Gambon Has Died At 82 After A 'Bout Of Pneumonia'

Actor Sir Michael Gambon, most known for his role as Hogwarts Headmaster, Albus Dumbledore, in the popular film franchise, "Harry Potter," has passed away at the age of 82.

Gambon reportedly died in the company of his family, wife Anne, and his son Fergus while in the hospital after a "bout of pneumonia."

Besides his role in "Harry Potter," Gambon was a prolific actor with several movies under his belt. 

From playing King Edward VII in "The Lost Prince" to his powerful performance as a villain in the movie "The Insider," the acting veteran has done and seen it all during his long and successful career.

Sir Michael Gambon, known for his iconic performance as Albus Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" movies, has passed away at the age of 82. Gambon reportedly passed away after suffering from a "bout of pneumonia."

In a statement, the late actor's family said: "We are devastated to announce the loss of Sir Michael Gambon. Beloved husband and father, Michael died peacefully in hospital with his wife Anne and son Fergus at his bedside, following a bout of pneumonia."

They continued, "We ask that you respect our privacy at this painful time and thank you for your messages of support and love."

The actor is survived by his wife, Lady Gambon, and his son Fergus. He also had two other children, Will and Tom, with his former partner Philippa Hart.

Gambon's filmography was large and vast and included amazing performances in films and TV shows such as "Path to War" and "The Insider."

Throughout his illustrious career, he won four BAFTA TV Awards for best actor. First was in his career-defining role in "The Singing Detective," and then for the 1999 TV series, "Wives and Daughters." He got his third Bafta for the 2000's show, "Longitude," and then the next year for "Perfect Strangers."

Gambon's role as Dumbledore is one that will remain in the hearts of fans for years to come. In a chat with the Associated Press, the actor revealed he had no idea how influential the fantasy film franchise was and how he came about to appreciate it.

"It's very odd. I hadn't realized before just how powerful these things are. I just do the job and go home, and you forget it," the late actor said at the time.

Gambon continued, "They rang me up and said, 'Will you do it?' Like any other job, I said, 'Sure.' Then you find yourself in the middle of this thing."

"I've played quite a lot of crooks and killers, and that's quite interesting. Then Dumbledore is the complete opposite, isn't he? He's a nice old man.

This will stick out as being a happy memory, being with a thing for so long and the worldwide love of it. You never forget that" he noted.

Following news of his shocking passing, several fans of the actor took to social media to pay their respect.

On the platform, X, formerly known as Twitter, a fan wrote, "Michael Gambon will live on in the hearts and the memories of every single person whose childhoods he lit up by his brilliant portrayal of Albus Dumbledore.

They concluded by adding an iconic quote from his character: "You think the dead we loved truly ever leave us? You think we don't recall them more clearly in times of great trouble?"

Another fan shared a heartbreaking tribute by remembering all the late actors who starred in "Harry Potter." They wrote, "In my own delusion I have always believed we'll get another part of the Harry Potter film series with the main cast returning in some way or the other, but we've already lost Snape, Hagrid, Dumbledore, Narcissa, Ollivander, Griphook, Vernon among others... Rest in peace legends."

The son of the first-ever Dumbledore actor, Richard Harris, also wrote a special tribute to Gambon: "Hilarious! A brilliant actor. I saw him on stage several times, and he lives unforgettably in my memory. He took over Dumbledore from my father, which was fitting as he over took Brando as my father's favourite actor."
