Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Ridiculed Over Yom Kippur Stumble

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene is in hot water once again – this time for her major gaffe over a message in observance of Yom Kippur!

The Republican fumbled miserably in her recent attempt to connect with the Jewish community by posting a Yom Kippur message with an image from a different celebration. Although she swiftly deleted the picture upon realizing her mistake, the damage was already done.

The politician's mix-up did not go well with the intended parties as they vehemently called out the 49-year-old for disregarding their traditions. To make matters worse, the mother of three reshared her Yom Kippur greeting without an apology.

The X platform overflowed with hate for the Milledgeville native after the blonde-haired businesswoman fumbled her greeting for this year's Yom Kippur holiday. In her since-deleted tweet, the far-right politician wrote,

"To all those preparing for the solemn day of Yom Kippur, I wish you a meaningful fast. Gamar Chasima Tova!"

Along with her Yom Kippur greeting, the conspiracy theorist shared an image intended for the Jewish event. However, the picture was that of a Hanukkah menorah or a Chanukah menorah. The object was a nine-branched candelabrum lit during the eight-day Jewish holiday of Hanukkah.

Additionally, a Shofar was placed in front of the candelabrum. The picture was stamped with the U.S. House of Representatives logo alongside Greene's full name.

When people called out the 49-year-old for using the wrong image, she deleted the tweet and dropped a new Yom Kippur greeting without the snap.

Failing to acknowledge her mistake seemed to have enraged many as the politician's initial post went viral on X, and the Jewish community did not hold back their anger. Many noted this was not Greene's first offense against the Jews, given her previous antisemitic remarks.

An individual quipped, "Ms. Jewish Space Lasers got her Jewish holidays mixed up (that is a Chanukah menorah. Wildly offensive — especially on the holiest day of the year in Judaism."

Congressman Jared Moskowitz user slammed the far-right activist, writing, "That’s a picture for Chanukah. Different Jewish Holiday. Yom Kippur is where you atone for your sins. Lord knows you will be very busy."

"Marjorie Taylor Green replies: 'Well, all your Jew holidays look the same to us. You should give a White Christian Nationalist a break, for my White God's sake!'" A third speculated, while a fourth teased the politician about her previous space laser statements.

"Everyone’s making fun of Marjorie Taylor Greene for putting a menorah on her Yom Kippur message, but in her defense, she thought it was an eight-pronged Jewish space laser," the X user joked. More backlash followed, with someone noting that Greene had no right to give a Yom Kippur greeting.

"Marjorie Taylor Greene could have posted the perfect Yom Kippur message and still been wrong because she's a Nazi," the netizen claimed. "I'll bet she was really smug and proud of herself when she first sent the Tweet without checking accuracy," another bashed the mother of three.

The Milledgeville native's slam fest continued with more antisemitism claims and quips at the politician's ignorance. "Happy, not even close to Hannukah. But we wish you well on Gazpacho Police Day, you ignorant NAZI," a commenter penned.

"And she wonders why everybody claims she's uneducated. Call her stupid Well, Marjorie, if you just do some research or let your staff do the research," an social media user wailed, while a fellow unimpressed fan wrote, "Moron! That's like posting a Christmas tree on Labor Day."

Greene's social media backlash stemmed from the Yom Kippur holiday being the holiest day of the year for Jews. Yom Kippur, also known as the Day of Atonement, is a two-day event based on the Jewish lunar calendar.

The calendar days are marked from sunset to sunset, meaning that the 2023 Yom Kippur holiday began at sundown on Sunday, September 24, and would continue until the following evening on Monday, September 25.

Additionally, the event includes the "Days of Awe," a 10-day period that began with the Jewish New Year called Rosh Hashanah. During Yom Kippur, those who practice Judaism are expected to repent and reflect on their sins at home or in a synagogue.

There is also the option of fasting from sunset to sunset on the holiday. However, this did not extend to children below 13, the elderly, and the sick.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women could also exclude themselves from fasting for medical reasons. 

Following sincere atonement for one's sins, people are believed to start the Jewish New Year with a "clean slate," forgiven for their past misdeeds.
