TikTokers Share Info About MGM Cyber Attack That's Wreaking Major Havoc

An empty casino floor is not a common sight in Las Vegas, but this week, that's the scene at the MGM Grand. And if that wasn't bad enough, lines to check in are miles long, some elevators are down, and the resort is currently cash only after a cyber attack has left them in complete disarray since earlier this week.

Many TikTokers who have inside information or are in Vegas currently are sharing what they are finding out and what they've been witnessing in informational videos.

Popular TikToker VegasStarfish, who shares Vegas insider secrets and tips, has been keeping her followers up-to-date on what's going on during the MGM Resorts cyber attack. In her most recent viral video, she explains that the cyber attack is an active issue on day three.

"Las Vegas is still under a cyber attack. This is day three. Here is everything that's not being reported by the media," she began her video. "This is the wildest update yet."

She credits the "power of social media" for being able to get more information out to the general public because guests of the hotel as well as employees, have been sharing all they know.

"All MGM resort properties are being held ransom by a group of cyber attackers," she said. "The most important leaks to come out have been from Caesars Entertainment employees who said they were hacked in the last couple of weeks and that Caesars paid the hackers off. And just hours after being posted, it was confirmed that Caesars did pay off hackers."

Since earlier this week, all MGM properties have been experiencing serious issues that are complicating employees lives as well as guests of the properties.

"Currently at all MGM properties, systems are still down. Guests are reporting odd charges on their credit cards, some elevators are down, all the phones are down, and in technology-based rooms, guests can't turn off lights or close the drapes," she continued. "MGM has confirmed that they will pay their employees on time, but otherwise very little is being said."

VegasStarfish added a comment to give another update, "Caesars has been sitting on this information for well over a week and only now confirmed that they too were hacked."

Many dropped into the comments to share their thoughts and frustrations or fears.

"PLEASE PLEASE be nice to the employees. This is killing us ?‍♂️," one person wrote. Another added, "Am I the only one who’s worried that this is just the tip of the iceberg?"

VegasStarfish gave an update on day two of the cyber attack that contradicts MGM's statement saying that everything is "okay and operational."

"That is not true," she said. "As of this morning, all websites, apps and phone lines are down. All employee portals are down. Guests are being checked in and out of their hotel rooms manually by employees using clipboards. They are not able to view receipts or charges at this time," she explained. "Kiosks, ATMs and credit card functions are down or limited. All machines must be hand paid by an employee, whether it is 10 cents or $10,000."

The only upside to all this insanity is that parking is currently free for everyone since those systems are also down.

According to ABC7, a hacker group has been identified as the possible source of the cyber attack. The hacker community claims that the ransomware group called ALPHAV, also known as BlackCat, compromised MGM by using LinkedIn to find an employee's information and then have a 10-minute conversation with the Help Desk.

The cyber attack began on Sunday and has affected MGM Grand, Bellagio, Cosmopolitan, Aria, New York-New York, Park MGM, Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay Bay and Delano.
