Singer Britney Spears might not have to be paying Kevin Federline child support for much longer.
The former couple was married from 2004 to 2007 and shared two children together: Sean Preston Federline, 17, and Jayden James Federline, 16. Sean is set to turn 18 on September 14, which means Britney’s child support might end at that time.
Britney Spears Reportedly ‘Relieved’ That She’ll Stop Owing Child Support To Kevin Federline Soon
Initial reports indicated that Kevin Federline moved the former couple’s two teenage sons to Hawaii on August 1 because his wife, former volleyball player Victoria Prince, had been offered a job at a sports department at a university in Hawaii. However, fans immediately went online to claim that there were ulterior motives at play.
In the state of Hawaii, child support can last up to age 23, as long as a child is enrolled in an accredited college, university, vocational school, or trade school. However, a source told the Daily Mail on Tuesday, September 5, that Britney is “relieved” that she won’t have to pay K-Fed child support after Sean turns 18 on September 14.
“Britney is relieved that Sean is turning 18 on September 14 because she is tired of paying Kevin the insane amount of money he is getting,” a source claimed. “Britney is happy to help Sean and Jayden. There is nothing she wouldn't do for her sons. But this would go directly to them after they turn 18 instead of Kevin.”
The outlet went on to note that, in California, child support ends when a child graduates high school or when they turn 19, whichever comes first. Although they noted that many thought that K-Fed would try to exploit the loophole and delay the end of child support by moving to Hawaii, there is a catch. As per the outlet:
“Under the revised statute 576B-611 (2016) if child support was established in another state then the state in which it was established has exclusive jurisdiction, stating verbatim: 'In a proceeding to modify a child support order, the law of the state that is determined to have issued the initial controlling order governs the duration of the obligation of support.'”
In other words, it looks like since the initial ruling was made in California, Britney’s child support payments to Sean will end of September 14. However, the “Toxic” singer will still be paying child support for Jayden until he turns 18 on September 12, 2024.
Kevin Federline Addresses Her Divorce From Sam Asghari
Kevin Federline spoke out shortly after Britney’s third husband, actor Sam Asghari, filed for divorce on August 16, 2023, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the split. According to documents obtained by The Blast, the “Special Ops: Lioness” actor listed the date of separation as July 28, 2023, meaning that the two have been separated for over a month now.
The day after Sam filed for divorce, Kevin Federline’s lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, told Page Six that Kevin “just hopes” that Britney and Sam are able to “make good decisions and work out, either go their separate ways or get back together.” He added, “Whatever is best for them. He wishes her the best.”
Kaplan went on to say that K-Fed is “sorry” that the marriage did not work out for his ex-wife and noted that the two have not spoken about the divorce at all. “Obviously, if Britney reached out to [Kevin], he wouldn’t avoid her call but I don’t see any reason why they would be speaking because of her divorce to Sam,” he said, adding that Kevin and Sam did not know each other personally.
Britney and Sam tied the knot at her Thousand Oaks estate in California in June 2022. Despite living nearby, her two sons opted not to attend the wedding. However, at the time, K-Fed wished her all the best. In a separate statement made at the time, Kaplan said that Kevin “wants her to be happy and believes this will be a positive step for her in a post-conservatorship era, building a healthy, happy future going forward.”
When asked why her two teenage sons didn’t attend the wedding, Kaplan said, “They think the focus of this day should be on Britney and Sam, and they are very happy for her moving forward.”
