Fan Urges Disney To Create A Queer Princess With New Petition

The Disney Parks and The Walt Disney Company are making an effort to bring more “inclusion” to rides and attractions around the world as well as into films and television shows.

Recently, the company announced the iconic ride, Splash Mountain, will be closing permanently to make room for a new “The Princess and the Frog”-themed ride. Additionally, Jungle Cruise at Disney World and Disneyland recently underwent changes as part of the reimagining of the ride. This new version of Jungle Cruise is part of Disney’s efforts to tell diverse, inclusive stories across the theme parks. And, earlier this year, Disney World in Orlando, Florida added a new doll to its iconic “it’s a small world” attraction, which features a boy playing the flute in a wheelchair.

Plus, earlier this year, Disney released its live-action “The Little Mermaid”, starring African-American singer and actress Halle Bailey as Princess Ariel.

Despite these efforts, fans still want to see Disney create a Queer Princess.

One Disney fan has created a Change.org petition, urging The Walt Disney Company to create a Queer Princess.

"Representation of queer characters remains few and far between in children's entertainment and virtually non-existent when it comes to leading roles," the fan wrote in the petition. "It is time for Disney to provide us with more diversity with regard to sexual orientation and give us a lesbian Disney Princess!," they continued.

The fan continued to explain why representation is so important to the community, explaining, "Many queer social media users, especially lesbian women, have recounted their confusion when trying to understand their sexualities and a common theme that is brought up time and time again. Either they explain how the expectation of a Disney princess-esque happily ever after caused them to feel that that was the only path or they express sadness over feeling they would never experience that happily ever after due to their sexuality."

The petition continued to state, "By portraying a lesbian Disney princess, Disney would be showing children that everyone is capable of having and deserves their fairytale ending, no matter who it’s with."

Not only is this fan urging others to sign the petition to gain Disney's attention, but they are also asking fans to help spread their word by sharing it on social media and telling others about the petition.

"Advocate for a queer Disney Princess by signing this petition, sharing it on social media, and posting your thoughts on the topic!," the petition states before adding, "Disney will go where the money is, if mass amounts of people let them know we want this representation and will support a movie that has it, they are more likely to listen!"

They continued to write, "By signing this petition we can bring attention to how important this issue is and how many people support it. The sooner we act on this, the sooner we can make a change. The world is progressing, and we must demand that Disney progresses with it."
