Fans of bare knuckle boxing know the name, the voice, the snazzy attire, and the energy!
Jeff Houston, otherwise known as “Mr. Live Worldwide,” sets the stage for some exciting fight fun when he bellows, “It’s time to knuckle up!”
Houston has been the announcer for Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, or BKFC, since June 2018, and has become well known for his high energy and famous catch phrase. The Squared Circle Announcer can be seen and heard during events with BKFC, the first ever state by state sanctioned legal bare knuckle fighting league in U.S. history.
Bare Knuckle Boxing Is Becoming More And More Popular
As many fighters are choosing to leave MMA and traditional boxing behind, bare knuckle boxing is becoming a popular choice. Fighters are headed into the “squared circle” for some knockouts and lots of adrenaline pumping excitement!
This style of fighting has been gaining in popularity recently, but it’s not at all a new sport. It’s actually one of the original forms of fighting that dates back centuries! The first bare knuckle champion was James Figg, who won the title in 1719.
Based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, BKBC is dedicated to preserving the historical legacy of bare knuckle fighting while also following a specific rule set to keep the fighters safe as they enjoy the sport.
For Fans New To The Sport, Here’s A Rundown On The Rules
Only established professional fighters in boxing, MMA, Muay Thai and kickboxing are allowed to compete. No newbies! And that goes for the referees and judges as well. They must have an extensive history in combat sports to be eligible to be a part of bare knuckle boxing.
Bare knuckle boxers do not wear gloves like traditional boxers. While many bare knuckle fight organizations require wraps, tape and gauze, BKFC fighters are only allowed to wrap their hands to within one inch of the knuckle. This is what makes BKFC the truest form of the sport.
“Punches are the only strike allowed and must be a closed fist. (No kicks, elbows, knees, or grappling). In a clinch, the fighter may punch his way out with the open hand. If there is a three-second lull in action while clinching, the referee will break the fighters,” the BKFC website reads.
“If a fighter gets knocked down, he will have 10 seconds to return to his feet, or the referee will stop the fight. You are NOT permitted to hit a downed fighter. If you do you will be disqualified, and your purse may be withheld. While a fighter is downed, the other fighter will be instructed to report to a neutral area.”
Now Back To Our Announcer…
Houston is such an important part of BKFC, and spectators and fans know it!
In early June, Houston shared some information about his experience starting out with the sport.
“Five years ago to the day, one event at the Cheyenne Ice & Events Center changed my professional life forever. This was the birth of Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship,” he wrote in the caption of his Facebook post.
“We were all in the same boat, not sure how to feel about anything or what to expect, but we knew deep down that we were excited and on the precipice of something very special.”
And since the sport began, it’s only picked up the pace in popularity winning fans over with every punch and drop of blood! And believe us – there’s PLENTY of it…
Houston also shared a post about the next upcoming fight captioning the promo photo, “Who’s going to be the inaugural BKFC World Flyweight Champion?! The Magician meets The Lion August 11th back at the site of KnuckleMania 3! Tingley Coliseum in the heart of the 505! Crazy excited for this one.”
