Sam Asghari Reportedly Files For Divorce From Britney Spears After 14-Month Marriage

Singer Britney Spears and her husband, Sam Asghari, have gone their separate ways after tying the knot in June 2022.

There were signs that the couple had been on the rocks for a while. They were photographed without their wedding rings earlier this year and Britney herself seemed to indicate that things were going south when she revealed that he "hates" her meditation practice and left her crying in her car in a deleted Instagram post.

The 41-year-old pop star and the 29-year-old Iranian actor first started dating after they met on the set of her "Slumber Party" music video in 2016. He popped the question on September 2021, only a few months before her conservatorship officially came to an end in November 2021.

On Wednesday, August 16, fans took to social media to react to the news that Britney and her third husband, Sam Asghari, were going their separate ways amid allegations that the pop star had cheated on the “Special Ops: Lioness” actor.

"Britney and Sam have split. She's adamant she didn't cheat. The two haven't got along for a while and it finally came to an end after a major blowup,” a source told ET on Wednesday morning, noting that Sam had already filed for divorce.

A source said that the “Womanizer” singer "has not been doing well" amid their split. "She has been denying any cheating allegations and going through a lot of emotions," the source told the outlet. "She is hurt because the situation brings up old feelings for her. This is the last thing she needed, especially after her boys moved to Hawaii, being worried about the fires there, and so on.”

Her two teenage sons, Sean Preston Federline, 17, and Jayden James Federline, 16, are reportedly “upset” by the wildfires, even though they are not on the island of Maui where most of the devastation has occurred.

"She has been trying to get back on her feet and be healthy emotionally, physically, and mentally. Britney has people by her side and her immediate circle is there for her,” the source added. “They are rallying around her." Britney has reportedly made amends with her mother, Lynne Spears, and her sister, Jamie Lynn Spears, over the past few months.

There have been rumors of trouble in the couple’s relationship for quite a while, although they did their best to hide it from social media. "Britney and Sam have had ups and downs throughout their relationship. They have a lot of love for each other, but they also argue a lot over fundamental issues,” a source told ET. “Sometimes they feel as though each other's needs aren't being completely met. Recently, things took a bad turn and their arguments became more serious and real."

Another source told the outlet that the couple, who started dating after meeting on the set of her “Slumber Party” music video in 2016, "have had issues on and off as a couple since before they were married."

"Their issues tend to get worse when they are away from each other and spending time apart. Britney has the tendency to feel like she isn't being prioritized by Sam at times,” the insider alleged. “Their arguments have led them to become unhappy at times in their relationship. They are also on different pages when it comes to their future as a couple, which has been a point of contention."

Sam cited “irreconcilable differences” as a reason for the split; he is requesting spousal support and attorneys fees, according to TMZ.  He listed the date of separation as July 28, 2023. He will be represented by his lawyer, Neal Hersh. As previous reports have indicated, it looks like Sam might contest the prenup, which maintains that Britney is entitled to her assets prior to the marriage.

According to the court documents, the actor “has yet to determine the full nature and extent of the separate property assets and obligations of each party." It goes on to say, "There are various items of community and quasi-community assets and debts, the full nature and extent of which are unknown to [Sam] at this time."

Although it’s unlikely that a judge would invalidate the prenup, it is possible that Britney might just sign a large check over to her soon-to-be ex-husband just to put the matter behind her.

Earlier on Wednesday, a source told TMZ that Sam moved out of the Thousand Oaks estate that he shared with the pop star amid their split. The insider noted “It’s only a matter of time before Sam files for divorce” after the two reportedly had a huge argument that resulted from rumors of infidelity. The source revealed that Sam believes that Britney cheated on him, but it’s unclear if there is any truth to the rumor.

However, it looks like their relationship has only gone downhill since they tied the knot. In May 2023, a new TV special called “Britney Spears: The Price of Freedom” gave new insight into their troubled relationship. According to TMZ:

“We’re told Britney has gotten physical with Sam and screaming matches have been frequent. We’re also told things have gotten so volatile security has had to step in. Our sources say Sam doesn’t stay at their home much anymore and it’s especially alarming because of how she has come to rely on him.”

At the time, Sam Asghari took to social media to denounce the report as “absolutely disgusting” and warned fans “don’t believe what you read online" in his Instagram Stories. Britney also addressed the allegations on Instagram, writing, “I don’t like people in [the] media bullying me and saying hateful things.”

Neither Sam nor Britney has commented on the split, although the actor has taken a break from social media following his mother's "major accident" earlier this month.
