The Barbie movie director, Greta Gerwig now holds the title of being the first solo female director to have a movie cross the billion-dollar threshold. The film was released in July and quickly became a fan favorite for many reasons.

The cast is chalked full of heavy hitters like Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Issa Rae, and more. Plus the soundtrack has become its own hit as well. Nicki Minaj, Dua Lipa, Ice Spice, Dominic Fike, and the newly disgraced Lizzo.

Gerwig put years of work into the certified hit film and not only does it show, it’s paying off. The first solo female director to cross the $1 billion threshold, that is no easy task. Even movies with bigger names have bombed.

Greta Gerwin Had Competition

For months fans were dueling over who would take the top spot, Barbie or its opening week competition, Oppenheimer. The historic film starring Cillian Murphy, Florence Pugh, and Rami Malek, and directed by Christopher Nolan focuses on the creator of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer.

The film, that also stars Emily Blunt did great in theatres but it couldn’t pass Barbie and all her pals. The reviews for both blockbusters are great, but all that pink and all that happiness is what led Gerwig to the top spot.

This Is the week of the director's birthday so needless to say, this is a great celebration to add to her special day!

Gerwig and her cast have been celebrating her birthday while still out and about promoting the Barbie movie. Gosling who plays Ken… main Ken went out of his way to put together a flash mob for Gerwig’s birthday surprise.

The video was shared this week on the Barbie movie Instagram. “As Kens know… Sometimes the only way to express your feelings is through song & dance!” reads the caption and video.

In the video, all the Kens gather for a performance of “I’m Just Ken” but then a bunch of Barbies join for Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night.” Gerwig cried a little at the sweet, appropriate sentiment.

“That was so beautiful,” she said, then comedically asks “Who are you?”

Greta Gerwig Had To Guess

At first, the writer had no idea who thought to do this. When prompted by the voice behind the camera, she still had “no idea.” They dropped a little clue for Gerwig, “Think of a bagpiper.” Gerwig giggled immediately.

Gosling had recently sent a bagpiper over to a sleepover hosted by Gerwig that was “girls only”. It included Issa Rae, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, and America Ferrera. No Kens allowed! Not only did the Scottish man play the bagpipe he recited the Braveheart speech.

This delighted the Barbies and confirmed to Gerwig that she picked the perfect Ken. The director spoke to GQ earlier where she told this story and spoke highly of Gosling. He “always can sense very quickly what would be the most delightfully funny thing to do next. And then he does it.”
