Russell Brand Opens Up About His 'Amazing' But Brief Marriage With Katy Perry

Years after their divorce, Russell Brand is finally opening up about his marriage to singer Katy Perry. The actor said their time together was during a "chaotic" period of his life, but it was also "amazing." 

Brand praised Perry during the interview, saying she's "an amazing person," but it was just the wrong time. Perry herself has previously reflected on her time with Brand and said she was still naive then.

Russell Brand was the latest guest on "Running Wild with Bear Grylls: The Challenge." During the interview, the actor opened up about his marriage to Katy Perry, which lasted about 14 months. 

Brand and Perry got married in 2010 and seemed happy together until he famously ended their marriage via text just before she took the stage for a major performance. He said their union happened during a "chaotic" era of his life. 

Brand said at the time, he wasn't properly successful and said he "didn't really start making a proper living" until his 30s. When Grylls pointed out that the actor had to "live through so much that publicly," the "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" actor agreed that it was his most public era. 

He also spoke about Perry herself and said she's "an amazing person." 

"It was kind of incredible to live for a moment in that eye of the cyclone type aspect of fame. Aside from my sort of feelings of affection for Katy, it's a time that I remember has been a little bit chaotic and a bit for me… a little disconnected," Brand added.

After their divorce in 2011, Perry moved on with singer John Mayer and later found true love with actor Orlando Bloom. The "Teenage Dreams" singer and Bloom are currently engaged and welcomed a baby girl named Daisy Dove in 2020. 

During an interview with Paper Magazine, Perry shared some of her lessons from romantic experiences. She said, "It's easy to be single and not to be called out on your stuff, living your awesome single life thinking you're the greatest, and the best, and doing anything you want. But then when you get in a partnership you guys are there to teach each other lessons."

Brand himself has also moved on. The "Get Him To The Greek" actor married Laura Gallacher in 2017, and they have two daughters, Peggy, 4, and Mabel, 6. The couple also recently confirmed that they're expecting their third child together. 

During her interview with Paper, Perry also discussed her union with Brand, saying at the time, she still "believed in Disney Princesses." The "California Girls" singer compared the reality of being married to that of a single person. 

She said, "It's easy to be single and not to be called out on your stuff, living your awesome single life thinking you're the greatest, and the best, and doing anything you want. But then when you get in a partnership you guys are there to teach each other lessons."

Perry said since then, she's become more "pragmatic and logistical" and "less fantastical about things." She added, "I was like, 'One person for the rest of my life,' and I'm not so sure that that idea is for me. I'm just such a different person than I was."

Russell appeared on "The Diary of a CEO" podcast with host Steven Bartlett. During this interview, the comedian revealed he and Gallacher are expecting their third child. The actor also shared some of his insights from being a father and got emotional. 

Bartlett said, "You fell in love and you've got two children. You've got a third on the way, around the corner. That's a very special love you have found." Russell then responded and said that being a father has taught him that "there is a lot more important in this world than me."

He also said, "There's a lot more important stuff in this world then what I want, think or reckon. It taught me that love is real. It teaches you everything to become a father. All lessons are there." 

The actor then got emotional and cryptic as he discussed a "future he won't be a part of." He added, "Any old man, any old woman. My little girls, it's just so beautiful."
