"I'm Glad My Mom Died" recently hit an amazing milestone.
Jennette McCurdy's first book isn't even a year old yet, but she now qualifies as a veteran best seller thanks to the book staying on the best-seller list for 51 weeks!
Jennette McCurdy Now Qualifies As A Veteran Best Seller
While several publishers declined reading the book proposal based on the title, McCurdy has definitely captured the attention of many who have read her book and helped it to stay on the best seller list for so long. The past year has been an adventure for the author who said she's being recognized more for the book than for her acting career.
"Not one person has approached me for being an actor from the TV show they watched when they were little," she told the New York Times. "For the past year, it has 100 percent been being recognized as the author of this book and I am beyond grateful for that. I wish I could describe to you how grateful I am. It literally makes my heart pound."
One of her most memorable moments being recognized happened at a dentist appointment.
"The dental assistant came in with her phone while I had the whole clip in my mouth. Literally holding my mouth open and, like, gunk falling out," she said. "She was like, 'Oh my God, can I get a picture? I love your book!'"
The author has met many people who have read her book and said it resonated with them. She's been told many stories from strangers who have also had complicated relationships with family members.
"That's been a really connecting experience," she said.
McCurdy also shared some information for anyone who's just starting out with writing their own book.
"Don't read anything you might be inclined to mimic. And write a first draft just for yourself," she shared. "If your story is something that you want to share with the world, try and separate yourself from your own experience as much as possible."
She's currently working on a second book and said she may only keep about 20 percent of the original version.
"Who knows if I'll ever write the thing if I get caught up in doubt too early. But I do love to bring doubt in when I'm looking over the first draft, figuring out what needs a rewrite and what needs to stay," she said. "I think there's a time and a place for the inner critic; I think there's a place for the guy. The inner critic is a guy, right?"
