Nicki Minaj Fans Blow Hot Over Netflix Documentary
Netflix's much-anticipated documentary "Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" was initially met with enthusiastic anticipation from fans and the music community alike. The project promised an in-depth exploration of the often-overlooked impact of women on the hip-hop genre and their groundbreaking journeys in an industry historically dominated by men.
However, as the trailer premiered on the streaming platform, fans quickly noticed the glaring absence of two legendary figures in the rap game, Nicki Minaj and Missy Elliott, per the Daily Mail.
Outraged supporters of Minaj took to social media, voicing their concerns and dissatisfaction, questioning why the iconic rapper was not included in a film seemingly tailor-made for her immense influence.
The premiere notably featured appearances from Cardi B, Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Roxanne Shanté, Ice Spice, Saweetie, and Latto, but Minaj was nowhere to be seen.
Barbz Are NOT Happy
Having noticed the "Super Freaky Girl" crooner's omission, several fans took to Twitter to document their displeasure.
One fan wrote, "Did Nicki decline to be in the doc or sum? cause idk how you can talk about women in hip hop without having Nicki?"
A second fan teased a publicity stunt by saying, "HOW do y'all know for sure Nicki isn't in it? They could be excluding her from the promo to get the shit to go viral."
"Whether Nicki licensed her music to them or not, if you're going to talk about the history of women in Hip Hop/Rap they better at least MENTION her," another fan pointed out. "Shawty ran it for almost a decade. No I'm not a barb, but I respect Nicki's artistry."
A fourth fan questioned, "A documentary about female rap, and Netflix wouldn't have thought to put the most influential, awarded, and credited female rapper Nicki Minaj in the documentary? Hmm."
Nicki Minaj Allegedly Didn't Give The Go-ahead To Use Her Music
Recent reports have shed light on the alleged reason behind Minaj's absence from Netflix's "Ladies First: A Story of Women in Hip-Hop" documentary.
According to a tweet by podcaster Shawn Allen, who is involved with the project, the acclaimed rapper and Missy Elliott "didn't allow their music and videos to be licensed for use" in the documentary.
"Nicki didn't let us license her music & videos," the tweet read.
"That's not what we're asking. Was the plan to include her?" a fan of Minaj asked Allen.
He replied, "Yes, but it didn't make sense bc she didn't give us any licensing."
The decision not to give Netflix the go-ahead to use her music and feature her in the documentary has left many of her fans seemingly joyful as they speculated that she didn't "get paid" enough.
Nicki Minaj Postpones Album Launch
In other news, Minaj sent her devoted fanbase, known as the Barbz, into a frenzy with the announcement of a delay in the release of her highly anticipated new album. The news broke via the artist's Twitter handle, where she addressed her fans directly, assuring them that the wait would be "worth it."
A rapper known for her chart-topping hits and unapologetic lyrical prowess, Minaj's fans have been eagerly awaiting her next musical offering. While disappointing to her legion of supporters, the delay has also stoked excitement and curiosity about what the multi-talented artist has in store.
"Dear Barbz, I've been trying to find the right time to tell you this for a few days," she wrote. "Due to some really exciting news that I'll share with you guys @ a later time, I've shifted the album date just a tad bit. Trust me, it'll be WELL WORTH THE WAIT…"
The reasons behind the delay have not been explicitly stated, but speculations abound that Minaj's perfectionism and dedication to delivering a unique and impactful musical experience are likely driving factors, especially with her reported documentary in the books.
