Actress Megan Fox is under fire after asking fans to donate to a friend's GoFundMe, even though it looks like she hasn't donated any money herself.
The "Jennifer's Body" actress shared a screenshot of the GoFundMe page to her Instagram Stories, encouraging her 21.3 million Instagram followers to donate after the father of one of her friends was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.
Megan Fox Under Fire For Sharing Friend’s GoFundMe Without Donating Herself
On Monday night, the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” actress shared a screenshot of a GoFundMe for her friend, Nails of LA creator Brittney Boyce. The petition, titled “Michael’s Medical Expenses,” only had raised $2,422 of their $30,000 goal from 24 donations by the time the actress shared the screenshot.
“My friends [sic] dad was just diagnosed with pancreatic cancer if you guys are able to help please do,” she wrote alongside a prayer hands emoji. According to the plea, Brittney's father was having some health issues last month and finally made it to see a doctor for a CT scan last week. The 64-year-old didn't have any plans to retire any time soon, but apparently, that changed with a cancer diagnosis, as Brittney noted that he "has already missed a lot of work over this and I assume he will be missing a lot more."
It is not clear what can be done for her father, as he has another appointment in ten days to discuss his options and treatment plans. Brittney called his cancer diagnosis "not fair," adding that he is "literally the best person, dad, husband, and grandpa." She added, "I know things are tough for everyone right now but if you’re able to donate or share it would really help. He picked up his first prescription yesterday and it wasn’t covered by insurance the cost of that alone was $1000 and it’s not even a full month supply."
She concluded her post by saying that the goal of the GoFundMe is to help him cover the cost of medical expenses so he "can focus on himself and not stress on finances."
GoFundMe Goal Doubles After Megan Fox Shared It On Instagram
Within twenty-four hours, the number of donations had climbed to 179, and $6,917 had been raised, which is still far short of the family’s goal, which has been upped to $60,000 – double what it was in the screenshot the 37-year-old actress shared the night before.
Although some fans did donate to the cause, other fans slammed the Tennessee native for not donating much herself. According to Celebrity Net Worth, she has a net worth of $8 million dollars. Her fiancé, Machine Gun Kelly, has a net worth of $25 million.
According to BuzzFeed News, MGK spent $30,000 dollars on a diamond-encrusted manicure that Brittney helped him create last year, which is exactly how much she was seeking in her original plea. The rocker wore the look at the 2022 Billboard Music Awards. It boasted more than 880 diamonds and weighed more than 11 carats.
Although it is possible that she donated anonymously, neither Megan Fox nor Machine Gun Kelly has been named as a donor. The highest amount that has been donated so far is $300, while the highest anonymous donation currently sits at $180.
The GoFundMe plea made its way to the FauxMoi Reddit page, where fans called her out for not donating herself. “I feel so uncomfortable when wealthy celebrities post GoFundMe pages for people they know. I know we don’t understand the full situation, but it always gives me an ick feeling,” one user wrote. “The wealthy should absolutely cover this. Sorry, not sorry. Stop hoarding money and asking your much poorer fans to help,” another agreed.
“I totally understand that money can have an effect on friendship and her friend may not be comfortable accepting the full amount from Meghan, but Meghan could very much make an anonymous donation to this fund or circulate it amongst a group of coworkers who are likely far better off financially than fans,” another fan commented.
“It just seems disingenuous, either this is a close enough friend that you pay off all her bills and never repost it, or it's not that close of a friend and the most effort you're willing to put into it is reposting,” they continued. “She has to know that fans are going to donate amounts that they can't really part with because they want to please/be noticed by her. Obviously, that's not brilliant behavior from fans, but it is what it is and she's been famous long enough to know that.”
“I don’t want to be that person but some of her outfits cost more than that. Include HMU cost, she can pay for the cancer patient’s aftercare. I get that giving money to a friend can put your friendship in a dicey situation but 30 grad is like a bucket of water out of the ocean for her,” another user commented, urging the actress to “Help your friend!!!”
