It was a good weekend for the "Insidious" horror film franchise. "Insidious: The Red Door," the fifth installment of the film series, topped the weekend box office, bringing in an estimated $33 million for the weekend, per Box Office Mojo. This marks the second-best opening weekend to date for the franchise, behind only "Insidious: Chapter 2," which opened to $40 million 10 years ago in September 2013.

'Insidious: The Red Door' Starts Strong At Box Office

"Insidious: The Red Door" managed to surpass the latest sequel in the "Indiana Jones" series, "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," which brought in $27.4 million over the weekend. That brings the Harrison Ford-starring film to a total of $122 million domestic and $249 million worldwide.

That weekend drop was actually not terrible for "The Dial of Destiny," considering its second-weekend drop was below 54%. The problem "Indiana Jones" faces is its extremely uphill climb to profitability with a reported budget of at least $295 million, if not more when print and advertising budgets are taken into account.

In contrast, "Insidious: The Red Door" has a reported budget of about $16 million, which has been the strength of the franchise since it began with the first "Insidious" film back in 2010. The budget of the first "Insidious" film was even smaller at about $1.5 million. "The Red Door" has a budget over 10 times higher than the original, and it is still on the lower side of budgets for wide-release films this summer.

"The Red Door" has already made about $64 million worldwide. That means the film has either already broken even or very close to it, so everything else after this weekend for "The Red Door" is pure profit, meaning it will be a highly profitable release for Blumhouse Productions, Screen Gems, and Sony Pictures.

"Insidious: Chapter 2" has the highest domestic box office take for the franchise with about $83 million. "Insidious: The Last Key," released by Universal Pictures in 2018, has the highest worldwide take of the franchise at $167 million. "Insidious: The Red Door," which reunites the original cast of the first two films, has a pretty good shot at beating the latter figure, but that remains to be seen.

Angel Studios' action thriller, "The Sound of Freedom," also had a strong opening weekend, bringing in $19.6 million. The film, which opened early on July 4, has now brought in a total of $41.6 million, making it a sizable sleeper hit. It was directed by Alejandro Monteverde and stars Jim Caviezel and Oscar-winner Mira Sorvino.

Elsewhere in the Top 5, while "Elemental" is not a huge hit compared to some of Pixar's past successes, it has managed to hang around a bit. It brought in another $10 million over the weekend after dropping only 17.3% in its fourth frame, bringing its domestic total to $109 million domestic and $253 million worldwide.

Lastly at No. 5, "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" brought in $8 million, bringing its domestic total to $357 million and $642 million worldwide. The box office numbers and accolades continue to climb for "Across the Spider-Verse," which bodes well for the next franchise installment, "Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse," which is due out next year.

"Insidious: The Red Door" features star Patrick Wilson ("Aquaman," "Watchmen") making his directorial debut for the franchise's fifth entry. He returns as Josh Lambert from the first two films, along with Rose Byrne as wife Renai Lambert, and Ty Simpkins as Dalton Lambert. The film is in theaters now.
