During a Vogue interview in May, Robbie revealed that she and Gerwig wanted the film to cater to fans and haters of the iconic Mattel dolls. She said, "We of course would want to honor the 60-year legacy that this brand has. But we have to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who aren't fans of Barbie."

The "Suicide Squad" actress also discussed the sexualization of the Barbie doll and how she addressed it in the movies. She said, "I'm like, Okay, she's a doll. She's a plastic doll. She doesn't have organs. If she doesn't have organs, she doesn't have reproductive organs. If she doesn't have reproductive organs, would she even feel sexual desire? No, I don't think she could."

Robbie further explained that the Barbie doll can be sexualized but "should never be sexy." The doll only wears tiny, short clothes "because it's fun and pink. Not because she wanted you to see her butt."
